Want a New Spring Wardrobe? Shop in Your Closet!
With an abundance of gorgeous trends slated for this spring, it can be hard to stop yourself from hitting the stores. But before you go blow your next paycheck on a completely new wardrobe, you should make sure you’ve fully shopped your own closet.
What do I mean by that? Well, many of us probably have plenty of pieces buried in our closets that will work with the current trends. With a little creativity, a willingness to look at your old clothes in a different light, and, yes, a few new purchases, you can easily incorporate spring looks into your wardrobe.
I went shopping in my own closet, and I found that I was able to style outfits inspired by four spring trends with the basics that I already have—only buying one new piece per look! Check out the inspiration below, then get ready to go on a shopping spree that won’t leave your wallet empty.
Black and White
This is one of the easiest trends to shop your closet for, considering you probably have plenty of black and white pieces. The best way to really get on board is to make sure you add a graphic element to your black and white outfit, such as a geometric print black and white dress, or a graphic black and white tank or tee. If you already have a black and white top, black flats, and black skinny pants, just add a black and white tuxedo blazer or cardigan to complete the look.
The Short Suit
If you’ve been reading any of my other spring articles, you’ll know this is a trend I am super excited about. The problem is, a lot of the short suits on the runway have matching patterns, which means the blazer and shorts were bought together. Who wants to go out and buy a whole new suit—one you can’t even wear to work?
But if you already have a pair of colored shorts (like my red ones) or a colored blazer, you can hack this trend by buying the other piece to complete the suit. If you can’t find a perfect color match, just look for a pattern that picks up the original color. Then, pair with a white button-down and a leather belt, and you’re good to go!
If stripes—especially of the nautical variety—are already a basic staple in your wardrobe, then you’ll have no problem completing this look without going to the store. Blend in with the bold stripes that are everywhere this spring by layering a basic striped shirt you already have with a bolder and thicker striped shirt that you purchase underneath. If you’re brave, you can even pop a striped blazer over this ensemble so you have three variations of stripes on. Pair with simple pants and sandals for a perfect casual spring look.

Even though the shirtdress is a classic piece for spring and summer, people are bringing them back this year in fun new ways. Since exaggerated floral prints are also big this season, I decided to invest in a new shirtdress in a flowery print. I then cinched it with a wide belt from my closet and paired with simple leather flats.
Another option: Freshen up a basic shirtdress by adding a trendier accessory (like a DIY neon necklace, perhaps!).
You don’t have to spend a ton of money on trendy pieces that will sit in your closet after one season to get this spring’s looks. Interpreting trends smartly stretches the basics you already have and doesn’t stretch your wallet—a win-win for all of us who don’t have unlimited budgets!
