Your New Role:

CNN is seeking a Senior Director of Newsletters to lead our growing and evolving portfolio of audience-first newsletter products. Reporting to the SVP of Audience, this senior leader will set the editorial vision and strategy for CNN's newsletter portfolio and drive innovation, editorial excellence, and sustainable growth across the full suite of offerings.

As CNN sharpens its newsletter strategy to deepen audience relationships, this role will be central in ensuring that newsletters reflect the journalistic ambition, voice, and values of CNN, while also aligning with business and product priorities. The Senior Director will lead and mentor a high-performing editorial team, partner with cross-functional stakeholders across news, product, growth, research, and revenue, and ensure that newsletters are delivering against key goals: habit, engagement, traffic, loyalty, and monetization.

This role sits within CNN's Digital Products & Services division and requires a sharp editorial leader with a strong product mindset, outstanding communication skills, and a deep understanding of how newsletters can deliver value to both audiences and the business.

Your Role Accountabilities:

  • Set and evolve the editorial strategy for CNN's flagship newsletters, ensuring they reflect CNN's news judgment, authority, and audience priorities.

  • Elevate 5 Things making it a brand differentiator by shaping its editorial identity and driving alignment across platforms, growth, and marketing efforts.

  • Own the editorial roadmap for newsletters: develop and execute a long-term vision for tone, voice, format innovation, personalization, and reader value.

  • Lead and develop the editorial newsletter team, ensuring team members have clear goals, pathways for growth, and the tools they need to serve as strategic partners across the organization.

  • Drive cross-functional collaboration with product, design, growth, and analytics teams to shape audience-informed newsletter products that align with broader business goals.

  • Define success metrics across the newsletter portfolio and use data to guide editorial and product decisions.

  • Greenlight and develop new newsletter products, ensuring all new launches are grounded in editorial need, audience insight, and business opportunity.

  • Champion editorial integrity and user trust while exploring sustainable paths to monetization and habit-building.

  • Serve as a senior editorial voice within the Digital organization, helping shape the broader audience and engagement strategy for CNN.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • 8-10+ years of editorial leadership experience in a newsroom or digital media environment, with a strong record of managing high-impact teams and products.

  • Proven ability to lead editorial strategy and execution for newsletters or recurring editorial products at scale.

  • Deep understanding of digital audience behavior, lifecycle engagement, and newsletter analytics.

  • Demonstrated success leading cross-functional initiatives and collaborating with product, growth, and analytics partners.

  • Exceptional editorial judgment, writing and editing skills, and a clear editorial point of view.

  • Experience mentoring editors and writers and guiding team development across levels.

  • Strong operational and organizational skills, with a track record of improving editorial workflows and systems.

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving media environment with shifting priorities and high editorial standards.

  • Passion for creating compelling, useful, and habit-forming products that meet real audience needs.
