Manager of Newsroom Finance

Job Description

The Washington Post's FP&A department is seeking a uniquely qualified individual with both finance and operations experience. This role requires the standard modeling and analytics skillset, leadership, and a sense of creativity and curiosity in the constantly evolving operations of a digital media business. You will be part of a team charged with shaping our digital transformation in the newsroom, leveraging data analytics and judgment to advise both short- and long-term planning.

The FP&A team is comprised of subject matter experts that support different departments and revenue streams. You will holistically manage and coordinate financial planning, analysis, and reporting of our newsroom operations. In this role, you will directly support senior and managing editors. The ability to understand and communicate financial risks and opportunities on an ongoing basis is imperative. You will use your subjective intelligence, client relationships, and leadership skills to build trust to serve the financial needs of the overall organization. This role will be reporting to the Director of FP&A.

Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic support and analysis to the executive editor and senior editors by overseeing monthly expense reports, leading quarterly newsroom forecast, managing newsroom headcount expenses, evaluating prior investments for ROI and business impact, and assessing necessary support costs for new investments.
  • Collaborate with Analytics and Newsroom teams on KPIs/OKRs to help translate data into insights that drive business decisions.
  • Manage the domestic and international newsroom budget processes by overseeing monthly close, including accrual and reclass reviews, in close collaboration with Accounting & FP&A teams.
  • Identify areas for process improvements, including leveraging technological solutions to improve efficiency.
  • Research finance trends in the news industry and communicate potential enhancements to newsroom and business partners.
  • Provide supporting documentation for internal, external, and other ad-hoc audit requests.
  • Manage direct reports by guiding and supporting career development and performance.
  • Provide excellent customer service to internal and external stakeholders.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 7+ years of accounting or finance work experience, with > 1 year of people management experience
  • A demonstrated understanding of accounting and financial concepts
  • High proficiency with PowerPoint and Excel
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to deliver insights, recommendations and results concisely and effectively to executive level management
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and on cross-functional projects
  • Detail-oriented with demonstrated initiative in research and follow-through
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Preferred: knowledge of Oracle Hyperion is a plus
