Job Description

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) is the state agency responsible for ensuring clean air and water, the safe management of toxics and hazards, the recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, the timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources.

Mercury Program

Program runs from June 2024 - October 2024

The hiring of the intern will provide experience and training in important environmental work the Department is undertaking while at the same time filling a critical need in the Mercury Management program associated with the safe management of mercury products. The intern will learn about recommended mercury clean-up and disposal methods and conveying that information to the public by updating MassDEP's interactive maps of recycling collection sites, website, and outreach materials. The website will also be updated with information on how to identify mercury products and safe handling and disposal of mercury products. The intern will also assist with the implementation of the mercury lamp replacement program.

  • Search for and update the recycling collection sites data to create accurate and easy to read information for users of the Residential Mercury Disposal GIS Map.
  • Review current outreach educational materials and ensure that they are consistent and up-to-date with recommended methods for the clean-up and disposal of mercury-containing products.
  • Assist with the efforts to make the MassDEP's Mercury Disposal page more user-friendly and concise.
  • Update and create fact sheets for the Mercury Department so website users can easily obtain answers to their questions.
  • Coordinate with DEP staff the implementation of the mercury lamp replacement program by organizing and tracking grant requests, award issuance, and outreach to awardees.


Qualifications

Familiarity with Massachusetts environmental regulations and policies

• Experience with computer tools that are used for research, particularly Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, SharePoint).

• Ability to write concisely to express thoughts clearly, and to develop ideas in logical sequence.

• Attention to detail and organization techniques and ability to multi-task.

• Initiative and ability to work independently while also interacting effectively in a team environmen t.
