About the Role
As Senior Director of Software Engineering, you will be responsible for all user-facing software applications in the Robotics division at Opentrons. You will lead a team of talented, passionate engineers in our mission to democratize access to lab automation. We build best-in-class experiences for our customers from our robotics hardware to the software ecosystem that supports it, and you will be tasked with making these experiences even better. In this capacity, you''ll partner with our Product Management team on strategy, roadmap and execution.
The Senior Director of Engineering reports directly to the Chief Technology Officer.
What You Will Do
- Participate deeply in the product development strategy cycle.
- Work with Product Management, Design and the rest of Engineering to craft the most impactful roadmap possible
- Lead multiple cross-functional Engineering teams and help them drive to successful delivery
- Supervise and mentor managers, architects and team leads, supporting their growth to higher-level responsibilities
- Own and execute on a hiring plan that brings new talented engineers into the Opentrons fold
- Be a leader in Engineering - help set the standards and processes that take us from good to great.
- Meet with customers to get feedback on our current performance and future roadmap
What We Are Looking For
Experience:
- Start-up Experience
- Minimum of 10 years of leadership experience in a software engineering environment
- Minimum of 5 years experience leading through others; you''ll be managing managers in this role and should feel very comfortable in that capacity
- Deep experience working with Product Management teams as a peer
- Experience driving high-level architecture of some engineering system; knowledge of our space is less important than knowledge of a process to get to great architecture decisions.
- Nice-to-have: experience working in an environment where you shipped a physical device
- Nice-to-have: experience with robotics
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Understanding of both Agile and "waterfall" SDLCs
- Understanding of software architecture in embedded and cloud environments is a plus
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
- Work is performed in a typical interior/office work environment
- Role is best-suited for someone in the New York City Metro area or someone who can commit to being there on a regular basis
- Some travel may be required
Compensation Range: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $245,000 and $295,000 per year; base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and years of experience. We typically target mid-range for well-qualified candidates. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including equity and full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. Following employment, growth beyond the hiring range is possible based on performance.
