The Cloud Native Platform (CNP) is a premier application development platform built on Kubernetes.  The Cloud Native Platform is responsible for the underlying infrastructure, operating model, and operational uptime of this platform. The team operates in a product model, using agile methodologies, and is responsible for the care and feeding, financial impact, and capacity management of the environment.  Team has operational responsibilities, including on-call rotations, as well as development of new features and Kubernetes operators within the environment.

At Nationwide, our Kubernetes environments are delivered across multiple clusters within in two regions on AWS, spanning multiple availability zones. The Nationwide implementation of the Cloud Native Platform is a mature, industry leading, instantiation of the latest Kubernetes features supplying a robust and feature rich implementation to the developer community, housing our most critical workloads with a high reliance on reliability and uptime.

As a Consultant role on this new team, an exceptional candidate should be prepared to:

  • Provide vision and design to new features and platform uplift

  • Lead initiatives within the team as a technical lead and accountable party for delivery

  • Have a teaching mindset to help junior associates learn how to best code and deliver product features

  • Able to help applications areas modernize their current infrastructure and application stacks for use within the CNP

  • Learn on-call responsibilities and be able to, eventually, work autonomously during on-call rotation (approximately once every 2-3 months)

Technical Expectations.  Kubernetes knowledge and coding skills are required.

  • Experience with deploying and managing Kubernetes environments and objects

  • High consideration given to folks with Certified Kubernetes Administrator certificates (CKA) and Certified Kubernetes Application Developer certifications (CKAD)

  • Experience with deploying applications and services within AWS, as the platform extends features across AWS

  • Terraform, Fleet, and ArgoCD for delivering and maintaining Kubernetes clusters is also high desire

  • Golang experience is a strong preference & python as a bonus.  Experience with some major programming language is a requirement, preference for Systems over web languages: Java, C#, C/C++, etc.

As a Consultant, Technology Engineer, you deliver standard and custom supportable technology products. The solutions you build are based on Nationwide’s architectural standards, technology roadmaps, industry trends and business requirements. You’ll focus on collaboration, data, systems, storage, middleware, network, security and contact center technology products. You’ll also be accountable for the operational aspects and management for the above products according to the business requirements and defined service level agreements (SLAs).

Job Description

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborates with Technology Architecture professionals to develop technology product roadmaps.

  • Designs and implements standard builds/templates for all technology platforms.

  • Drives product improvements through optimization, enhancements and the implementation of new features and functions.

  • Works continuously with other Technology Engineering teams and Technology Architecture to ensure the success of products.

  • Conducts “proof of concept” labs for enhancements, new solutions and competitive bake-offs.

  • Designs standard and custom technology solutions for business partner projects, including pre- production testing, performance tuning, handoffs and certification.

  • Conducts proactive and reactive monitoring to detect, predict and resolve abnormal conditions in the environment.

  • Collaborates with vendors to help drive design innovation in product enhancements and improvements.

  • Executes on production engineering processes, incident management, root cause analysis, problem management, change management, release management and knowledge management.

  • Provides complex production support for all technology platforms.

  • Provides oversight for technical labs and development environments.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to AVP, Director or Manager Technology Engineering Manager/Technology Product Manager.

Typical Skills and Experiences: 

Education: Undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems or a related field is preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: Technology certifications or designation are not required, but encouraged (i.e., AWS, Azure, scripting and development languages, delivery methods, security).

Experience: Six years or more experience with the most complex integrated solutions with an ability to design and develop and modify new and existing solutions for specialized needs.  Experience with multiple technologies and within one or more domains. Experience with automation of deployment of solution configurations. Experience in training/guiding less experienced staff. Experience with solutions:  IaaS, PaaS, SaaS and package solutions. 

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Strong communication skills, knowledge of planning, management and execution of Accelerated Solutions Deliver framework, Information Security acumen. Influencing, negotiating and priority setting needed. Insurance/financial services industry knowledge a plus.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the Vice President and HR Business Partner.
