Who we're looking for

Toyota's Powertrain Design team is seeking a passionate, highly skilled and experienced Senior Engineering Manager to lead our Driveline and Transaxle Design team. This role involves overseeing the design, development, testing, and optimization of systems, ensuring they meet performance, efficiency, and regulatory standards.

The ideal candidate will have a:

  • Strong background in mechanical engineering.
  • Deep technical knowledge of driveline parts such as driveshafts, propeller shafts, transfer case and differentials and transaxle/E-axle parts such as housings, gears, shafts, lubrication.
  • Proven track record of successfully delivering projects.

Reporting to the PDC General Manager, the person in this role will support the PDC department's objective to build "World Class Powertrains in North America".

  • Team Leadership: Utilizing the Toyota Way to oversee a team of design engineers, providing guidance, mentorship, support and growing team members based on each members' career development plan.
  • Project Management: Leading the design, development, and testing of driveline components and systems, ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Technical Oversight: Ensuring the technical integrity of designs (i.e approving 2D drawings, supplier spec sheets, test results, etc.) using standard design processes to ensure performance, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Building relationships with key stakeholders such as North America Manufacturing Centers (NAMCs), TMC (Toyota Motor Corporation) design, vehicle design and supplier partners to ensure seamless integration of driveline systems. Strong capability of working collaboratively with diverse teams is crucial.
  • Innovation: Driving innovation in technologies through regular technical reviews with TMC design and supplier partners, attendance at industry events and benchmarking competitor designs to ensure our competitiveness (i.e. cost and customer expectations).
  • Improvement: Advancing PDC's design process capability to improve quality, EDER, and on-time delivery of design deliverables.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Reporting key team metrics, project status, challenges, and potential solutions to senior management and other stakeholders. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are key.
  • Budget Management: Managing JRN, NAF and RJR project budgets and ensuring efficient use of resources.

What you bring

  • Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in an Engineering discipline (e.g., Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Aeronautical, Aerospace, Electro-Mechanical) or related field.
  • 10+ years of automotive design and development.
  • Proven experience in a managerial role.
  • Strong technical and program knowledge of powertrain technologies, covering conventional ICE, hybrid and/or BEV drivetrains.
  • Experience in the detailed design and release of prototype and production component drawings and supplier spec sheets.
  • Knowledge of typical automotive manufacturing methods.
  • Demonstrable CAD skills and expertise of GD&T.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze complex engineering challenges.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills with a proven track record of successful project delivery.
  • Willingness to travel both domestically and internationally up to 15%.

Added bonus if you have

  • Master's degree in mechanical/automotive engineering.
  • Hands-on experience with drivetrain, transmission, and powertrain assembly.
  • Experience with CREO, WBDM, and typical powertrain CAE design software (e.g., FEA, CFD, GT Power or similar).
  • Professional knowledge of DRBFM.
  • Knowledge of Quality Management and Supply Chain Management principles.
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Successfully passed a Toyota TBP panel.
