Who we're looking for

Toyota's Carbon Neutrality & Regulatory Affairs Division is looking for a passionate and highly-motivated Regulatory Implementation Principal Engineer - Core Products.

The primary responsibility of this role is to oversee Toyota's regulatory and certification infrastructure for TMNA's automotive on-road product portfolio for North America.

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Core Products Regulatory Implementation, the person in this role will support the Regulatory Implementation department's objective to assure regulatory expertise, compliance validation and certification of TMNA's core product market of on-road passenger vehicles and trucks sold in North America.

What you'll be doing

Maintaining and overseeing regulatory, compliance, and certification infrastructure for Core TMNA products, including but not limited to:

  • Develop detailed project compliance and certification schedules with input from multiple sources including project management, design, and product planning to ensure that all North America destination objectives can be met within the allotted project timing or negotiating as necessary.
  • Serve as a Toyota regulatory subject matter expert (SME), especially for Federal & Canada, Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (F(C)MVSS), advising a wide variety of internal stakeholder functions.
  • Coordinate the development of regulatory interpretations for applicable products as requested by R&D.
  • Collaborate with Toyota's Vehicle Development Engineering (VDE) to provide advice on regulatory scope, process, and challenges for core products.
  • Utilize existing Toyota tools to support VDE with robust compliance assurance and certification processes.
  • Collaborate with Program Managers to align key milestones of compliance and certification planning with product development schedules and milestones.
  • Establish and lead regular technical and regulatory meetings with project management and design groups within TMNA R&D to ensure key compliance and certification milestones and deliverables are met as planned.
  • Develop and maintain operating procedures and work instructions for critical processes embedded in our existing regulatory infrastructure.
  • Closely coordinate with TMNA R&D, Legal, and Quality Functions, and TMC Regulation & Certification Division for development activities. Excellent written and verbal communication and negotiation skills are key.

What you bring

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in related engineering discipline or related field; AND/OR commensurate experience.
  • 10+ years of related experience with at least 5 years in crash safety.
  • Proven knowledge and experience in automotive on-road product regulations, especially Light-Duty vehicle or FMVSS requirements.
  • Demonstrated project management capabilities including process development and process documentation. (5+ years)
  • Full capability in MS Office suite and experience with project management tools.
  • Strong attention to detail, and excellent organizational skills and ability to effectively prioritize and manage simultaneous projects.
  • Ability to represent our division and company to higher-level stakeholders across the enterprise, and outside of Toyota.

Added bonus if you have

  • Experience coaching or mentoring other engineers.
  • Experience with FMVSS testing or evaluation for on-road vehicles.
  • Master's degree in Engineering or related field.
  • Bilingual skills.
