Who we're looking for

Toyota's Material Engineering Department is looking for a passionate and highly-motivated Materials Engineer to work in the Organic Materials group.

The primary responsibility of this role is to instruct and evaluate plastic, rubber, leather and fabric materials, as well as evaluate tier-1 suppliers' part performance through the vehicle development process.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, the person in this role will support the Materials Engineering Department's objective to apply innovative materials that meet customer and company needs.

What you'll be doing

  • Collaborate with Toyota design engineers and suppliers to select the best materials for new parts.
  • Lead suppliers in the evaluation of new materials or part designs.
  • Identify and develop innovative material solutions to reduce cost, mass production, improve quality, and/or improve sustainability.
  • Collaborate with Design and Quality engineers to resolve production or field quality issues.

What you bring

  • Bachelor of Science (or higher) degree in Materials Science, Plastics Engineering, Plastics Engineering Technology, or Chemical Engineering; AND/OR commensurate experience.
  • Proven experience working with design/development/evaluation of automotive organic materials (e.g. plastics, rubber, leather, fabric, etc.) and manufacturing processes.
  • Project Management experience.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 15%.

Added bonus if you have

  • Master of Science degree (or higher) in Materials Science, Plastics Engineering, or Chemical Engineering.
  • Experience mentoring and/or coaching less experienced team members.
  • Experience with writing code to analyze data and/or create software tools to improve efficiency.
  • Experience visualizing data via PowerBI or similar tools.
  • Experience using FEA to simulate plastic part evaluations.
