About the Team
This role will sit within the USDS Product Policy Team and specialize in Integrity and Authenticity. Maximizing our commitment to free expression while ensuring the safety of our community is the team's north star. You will need to cultivate a deep understanding of the platform, its features and workflows, and its diverse community. The role will need to apply this knowledge to ensure that our policies and enforcement processes respect political speech as well as one's ability to express political opinions. We are dedicated to mitigating real world harm while safeguarding civic institutions and processes, like voting and political engagement. This will require developing systems for tracking and anticipating user behavior and identifying thoughtful and creative policy solutions in a rapidly-changing environment. You will work closely with a variety of internal partners including global policy experts on Integrity and Elections,Threat Discovery and Prevention, Product, and Legal Policy Operations to ensure that TikTok is able to detect, triage, and prevent safety incidents. It can be based in Los Angeles or New York.
Our Product Policy team performs a critical function that supports our efforts to address objectionable or disturbing content. Content that the Product Policy team interacts with includes images, video, and text related to every-day life, but it can also include (but is not limited to) bullying; hate speech; child abuse; sexual assault; torture; bestiality; self-harm; suicide; and murder.
It is possible that this role will be exposed to harmful content on a daily basis.

Responsibilities:
- Rapidly assess large volumes of user content and provide policy calibrations based on ever-changing real-world contexts
- Rely on data-driven assessments of integrity and authenticity content to inform policy development, training and scaling of enforcement tools
- Support preparation for the platform's election and civic integrity work by detecting policy edge cases and proposing scalable solutions
- Proactively identify and evaluate emerging misinformation and conspiracy narratives and other real-world risks to our platform and drive solutions to help mitigate them
- Work closely with cross-functional partners and external experts to stay up-to-date on emerging political, demographic, scientific and social media trends in the US to predict and prevent violations of TikTok's community guidelines
- Assist team lead in providing comprehensive and ongoing training designed to inform the moderators about policy, procedures changes, recent trends, and updates
- Become conversant with new tactics, techniques, and patterns used by adversarial and abusive parties to interfere with critical civic processes, spread harmful misinformation, and circumvent platform safety mechanisms.
- Execute research projects and provide summaries about salient new academic work on misinformation and content safety interventions. Responsibilities include research, work planning, data collection & analysis
- Analyze existing policies and procedures to identify gaps, inconsistencies, or conflicts

Qualifications

Qualifications
- Over 3 years of work experience in Trust & Safety, content policy, or brand safety roles or another relevant field with a focus on civic Integrity (i.e, elections) and harmful misinformation
- A deep interest in and knowledge about current events and politics
- Experience with trust and safety best practices, safety models, scalable solutions, safety by design principles and technical tools
- Ability to work with multiple external partners (i.e., vendor operations) to ensure our policy and procedure expectations are met
- A careful and systematic thought process about how to leverage data and insights to inform policy development
- Some background in operations, with a proven ability to structure policy and process-oriented milestones
- Deep knowledge in how policy develops in new media, technology, entertainment, or related fields

Preferred qualifications:
- Understanding how machine learning models are applied to safety problems
- Familiarity with AI-generated content trends
- Proven ability to develop sound research methodologies and collect, synthesize, analyze, and interpret data
- Experience managing complex research projects
- Experience working in a start-up, or forming new teams in established companies
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and understanding of data access tools, including but not limited to SQL
- Your ability to work in a high tempo environment, adapt, respond to day-to-day challenges of the role.
- Your resilience and commitment to self-care to manage the emotional demands of the role.

Job Information

[For Pay Transparency] Compensation Description (annually)

The base salary range for this position in the selected city is $93600 - $160000 annually.

Compensation may vary outside of this range depending on a number of factors, including a candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies and experience, and location. Base pay is one part of the Total Package that is provided to compensate and recognize employees for their work, and this role may be eligible for additional discretionary bonuses/incentives, and restricted stock units.
