Job Description
The Washington Post is looking for an experienced, analytical and experimental journalist to serve as Newsletters Director.
Newsletters are an important and intimate way for Post audiences to connect with our journalism. The person who fills this leadership position within the Audience department will be vital to ensuring that each Post newsletter keeps the privilege of inbox space, and our readers' needs, in mind.
The ideal candidate has substantial experience, using data, in developing strategies for newsletter products that maximize opportunities to reach new audiences and readers. The successful applicant will also be a confident leader who can inspire a talented roster of newsletter writers and editors to continually experiment with form and content. This role reports to one of two deputy heads of audience strategy.
Responsibilities:
- Strategize and execute on the best ways to deliver The Washington Post's journalism directly to subscribers.
- Develop and launch newsletter products to engage new audiences and meet audience growth targets.
- Drive growth, engagement and subscriptions with our inbox products.
- Analyze audience data and clearly communicate actionable insights to newsletter writers and editors on the team and around the newsroom.
- Harness our journalists' abilities to develop a loyal audience through their voice and quality reporting, subject-matter expertise or curation.
- Manage a team of two high-performing newsletter strategy editors who work both directly on newsletters and collaborate closely with writers and editors across The Post.
- Work with colleagues around the newsroom and the commercial side to maximize revenue and sponsorship opportunities.
- At least 8 years of professional newsroom experience, with at least two of those years in a leadership or strategy-focused position.
- Cutting-edge understanding of newsroom analytics and audience data.
- A passion for personality-led, voice-driven, informative and engaging newsletters.
- Demonstrated expertise in newsletter best practices and a track record of consistently identifying opportunities for experimentation and synthesizing user feedback.
- A well-developed point of view on how best to understand audience needs, discover what builds habit, develop a subscription strategy and what makes receiving a newsletter fun or essential.
- A collaborative mindset and the ability to team up with partners in Product, Engineering and Marketing to strengthen our products and tools.

Compensation and Benefits:
The salary range for this position is: $122,500.00 - $204,100.00 . The actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
