The Vice President Investment Risk, Alternatives, will join a talented and high-performing Credit and Market Risk team that oversees credit and market risks across The Hartford and a wider set of risks of the Hartford Investment Management Company (HIMCO) subsidiary. The Credit and Market Risk Team is the independent second line risk function with responsibilities for identifying, monitoring, managing and reporting risks across the firm as note above. The Vice President Investment Risk, Alternatives, will report to the Head of Credit and Market Risk and HIMCO CRO.

Responsibilities:

  • Drive risk identification and monitoring of market and credit risks within the General Account with the primary focus on the alternatives sector.
  • Partner with investment teams and other investment functions (e.g., market, credit, performance, operations) to help manage key market and credit risks.
  • Lead and mentor junior and mid-level risk staff in best practices, risk assessment and metrics.
  • Assist in developing risk measurement, aggregation, and monitoring of relevant risk metrics and analytics, including stress testing.
  • Report and communicate risks to senior risk management, portfolio managers, traders, credit analysts and other departments such as legal and compliance.
  • Enhance stress testing framework as part of on-going risk responsibilities
  • Conduct market research as appropriate to strengthen risk analyses capabilities.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in risk management including 5+ years of experience in alternatives, including but not limited to, private equity, venture, infrastructure, and private real estate.
  • Hands-on model development experience required, preferably in a fixed income buy-side setting.
  • Hands-on experience with Aladdin, Bloomberg or similar third-party risk and performance systems.
  • Strong quantitative finance skills
  • Hands-on experience in Python, R, Excel/VBA or related languages.
  • Master's or PhD in finance, hard sciences, computer science, economics or related fields. Alternatively, holding an FSA and/or relevant undergraduate degree with strong, pertinent work experience.
  • Excellent communications skills.
  • Strong collaboration and demonstrated ability to forge strong working relationships across multiple functions to drive results.
  • Curiosity and inquisitiveness with strong problem-solving skills and resourcefulness.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment with changing ad-hoc priorities while managing longer-term projects.
  • Organized and detail oriented.
  • Experience managing small teams preferred.

Location:

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in the Hartford, CT office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
