The Hartford is seeking a Staff Software/Reliability Engineer within the Personal Insurance organization and will have end-to-end technical accountabilities in reliability engineering, production support, and application operations for a product within personal lines portfolio in a highly distributed, integrated, multi-platform environment

We are looking for a Staff Reliability Engineer who:

  • Has a strong technical understanding of complex traditional and modern architectures and systems
  • Fundamentally treats Production Support as a Software and Systems Engineering Problem
  • Has natural inclination to automate and drive self-healing capabilities
  • Has innate curiosity of how systems work and is a continuous learner
  • Applies pragmatic design patterns, reliability, and incident management best practices to build solutions for complex problems

This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office (Columbus, OH, Chicago, IL, Hartford, CT or Charlotte, NC) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Responsibilities:

  • Expertise in the full stack including software components, database, platforms and network infrastructure
  • Guide the use of best-in-class software engineering standards, tools, and design practices to enable highly available and performant customer-facing applications.
  • Lead adoption of metrics of overall application health - availability, performance, monitoring, alerting, quality, currency and resiliency
  • Perform troubleshooting, analysis, research and resolution of production incidents using advanced query and programming skills
  • Oversee application quality and integrity during production support changes through the software development life cycle, including accuracy of technical designs, build, testing and implementation.
  • Ensure operational excellence. Independently drive the triaging and service restoration of all critical incidents and minimize the impact to business.
  • Drive root cause analysis and permanent solution through sound problem management practices.
  • Ensure stability and performance of the systems in application portfolio across both production and pre-production environments.
  • Continuously improve the observability of our technology stack by evolving the usage of logs, metrics, tracing, dashboards, monitoring alerts, and integration of metrics with CI/CD pipelines.
  • Ensure transition from development to production meets or exceeds all operational requirements.
  • Ensure strict adherence to IT regulatory and compliance requirements for all applications, drive remediation of all internal, regulatory and SoX audit findings.
  • Ensure that all technical documentation and artifacts are accurately prepared, maintained and cataloged.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Computer Science or related disciple with at least 4+ years of hands-on experience in IT systems analysis, design, development and application support.
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented programming principles and concepts with prior or current development experience in one or more of the following languages: C#/.Net , Java, Restful and Soap Web Services, HTML5, CSS, AJAX, JavaScript, JSON, XML
  • Thorough understanding and experience with SQL/T-SQL/PL SQL on SQL Server or Oracle relational database technologies
  • Experience with continuous integration and DevOps methodologies, preferred tools such as GitHub, ADO, Jenkins, Nexus, Rally, SonarQube etc..
  • Familiarity with observability tools like Dynatrace and Splunk is essential
  • Willingness to learn new product-based technologies and experience with Insurance Policy suites such as Duck Creek or Guidewire configuration is a plus.
  • Solid understanding of technologies that support the services offered for cloud applications (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) is essential and Gen AI solutions is a plus
  • Firm analytical and problem-solving skills

Candidate must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$126,160 - $189,240
