The Business Law Unit is seeking a talented lawyer to join the Employee Benefits Law team as Senior Counsel. This team partners closely with the Employee Benefits business unit and provides a wide array of legal services to support the development, approval, sale, implementation and application of group life, disability, paid and unpaid leave and supplemental health products. Legal support includes advice on product drafting and development; rate and form filings; underwriting practices; sales and distribution; operations; contract negotiation and drafting; regulatory inquiries and complaints; claim practices; legislative and regulatory developments (state and federal); major business initiatives and transactions; and anything else that may impact the underwriting and sale of group insurance. As the main point of contact for all legal-related business issues, the Employee Benefits Law Team regularly coordinates with Law Department colleagues with specialized expertise (e.g., IP, Privacy, Government Affairs, Enterprise Transactions, Litigation, Corporate, Compliance) in order to provide robust solutions to legal questions.

This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement. Candidates who live near our office location (Hartford, CT) will have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise.

Core Responsibilities:

The Employee Benefits Senior Counsel position will report to the Managing Assistant General Counsel:

  • Paid Leave (Statutory/PFML/STD/LTD) and provide end-to-end support for a wide array of Employee Benefits business units, with a particular focus on paid leave insurance (Statutory and PFML) and Short-term and Long-term Disability.
  • The candidate will be expected to build relationships with business clients, identify key legal issues presented and provide thoughtful and efficient legal advice to support business initiatives.

  • A successful candidate will have the ability to:
  • Develop subject matter expertise and demonstrate knowledge and judgment on business legal issues.
  • Spot legal issues in business initiatives and offer thoughtful, creative legal solutions.
  • Critically analyze complex legal and regulatory framework across 50 states, and assist the business to develop efficient and workable practices and processes
  • Leverage tools and legal research to provide legal advice.
  • Draft, edit and negotiate contracts and other legal documents as needed.
  • Develop a strong understanding of the Employee Benefits Business Units core initiatives and organizational structure.
  • Effectively communicate with upper-level management at the Company.
  • Advocate for client interests to state regulators and other external parties.
  • Demonstrate well developed communication skills and independent judgment.

JD from accredited law school and 6+ years of legal experience are required. Candidates with fewer than 6 years' legal experience may be considered depending on the nature of experience.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$149,600 - $224,400
