Reporting to the Head of The Global Insights Center, the Economist will be responsible for researching trends and data related to the US economy, and as applicable, international economies too. Sectors of the economy that will be of particular focus include healthcare, pharmaceuticals, construction, housing, autos, tech, labor markets, inflation, consumer demand, and global trade. The Economist may also conduct research on geopolitics and international risk. The analysis will be used by the candidate to formulate US and international economic views and outlooks and their implications for risk. In particular, the output of the research will be utilized by internal departments to help underwrite decisions and risk analysis. The candidate will also support risk governance decisions based upon their research findings. The candidate will also at times brief senior internal and external stakeholders on the latest trends in the US and global economy. The candidate may also be build economic models to help forecasting and form forward looking views. Strong knowledge of Excel and modeling is preferred while econometric modeling skills will be additive.

Conducting Economic analysis

  • Follow and track data in the US and international countries to formulate views on economic trends in various markets.
  • Quantify these trends using excel and available data to narrate developments and insights to stakeholders addressing how/why these developments could be of consequence to their operations.
  • Focus on major facets of the US economy, and key sectors such as healthcare, construction, housing, and others.
  • Also, focus on state and local economic trends.
  • Build models to develop economic outlooks and forecast specific data points.
  • Track key sectors of the US economy that are of importance to underwriters and discuss the team's views of these sectors with the respective department.
  • Produce written reports, white papers, briefings, and presentations outlining views on the state of the economy and key sectors.
  • Follow geopolitical trends and become an expert on a geographic region helping socialize the team's views on geopolitical risk.

Internal Advisory and Governance

  • Work with various underwriting departments to understand how their business operates and how they quantify risk.
  • Based upon the overall economic and geopolitical view; discuss with units how emerging trends could affect their risk decisions.

Supporting the Global Insights Center's Client Engagement

  • Work with the firm's clients to articulate the department's views on economics and geopolitics and its implications for their business lines.
  • Develop presentations and briefings that are catered to the client's needs based upon their activities.
  • Develop innovative new products that can help socialize the team's views to new and perspective clients.

Qualifications

  • 7+ plus years of relevant work experience as a macroeconomic, sector, financial market, state and local economics, or geopolitical analyst at an insurance firm, investment bank, investment management firm, rating agency, or consulting firm.
  • Knowledge and experience working on US economics and international markets.
  • Formal training in economics, geopolitics, or economic modeling required.
  • Experience working with large financial institutions and managing those relationships.
  • International work experience preferred
  • Strong process management discipline; establishes priorities, anticipates problems, determines completion dates, knows and communicates the status of assignments; manages time effectively; uses the services of others effectively.
  • Team player with a strong collaborative orientation; ability to build strong relationships across an organization.
  • Entrepreneurial and creative focus to determine new work streams, initiatives, and deliverables that could be of value to internal parties and external clients.
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity in a matrixed organization; ability to guide, influence and navigate effectively with different constituencies in achieving company goals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Degree in finance, economics, or a related field preferred.
  • The position title and level will be commensurate with experience and determined after careful assessment of the selected candidate's skills.
  • This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in one of The Hartford offices listed, 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$140,800 - $211,200
