This position is part of the Workers' Compensation actuarial pricing team which provides support for $3B+ of Workers' Compensation business across The Hartford's business units - both Small Business and Middle & Large Business. The Hartford is an industry leader in Workers' Compensation and this role will is integral to monitoring and partnering across teams to drive continued profitability for the Workers' Compensation line of business. The scope of this role includes ownership of internal indications for the line - including the adoption of capabilities and innovative use cases related to modeled indications, and supporting various actuarial studies that feed into rate indications and predictive models.

This role reports to the Workers' Compensation Actuarial AVP and will partner closely with the Actuarial Strategic Modeling (ASM) team on development and enhancements to WC predictive models. In addition, the role will engage with product management teams across both Small Business and Middle & Large Business, as well as stakeholders focused on industry verticals. The candidate may also represent The Hartford on various actuarial committees for industry rating bureaus.
This individual will manage a staff of four individuals. The ideal candidate is results driven with a commitment to meeting deadlines. They will manage multiple priorities and need to deliver innovative enhancements and drive adoption of new analytical capabilities for the line. A strong actuarial background is required with strong project management, leadership, and communication skills.
Responsibilities:
- Manage an actuarial team responsible for producing internal rate indications for Workers' Compensation, including partnership with Actuarial Strategic Modeling (ASM) team to sustain and enhance underlying predictive models.
- Partner with stakeholders across business units and industry verticals to effectively communicate changes in indications, focused on driving improved business outcomes.
- Deliver and drive adoption of innovative Workers' Compensation use cases for ASM predictive models including indication deep dive tools, improved analysis and insights of emerging trends and improved model predictions for pricing purposes.
- Drive execution for annual updates of various actuarial studies for use in indications including Loss Development, State Trends, and Excess Loss Factors.
- Build expertise in Workers' Compensation issues and trends including knowledge of available industry data, research, and analytical tools and resources.
Experience & Skills:
- FCAS preferred, but not required.
- 5+ years of actuarial experience.
- Management experience preferred, but not required.
- Prior experience with Workers' Compensation, indications, and predictive modeling is preferred, but not required.
- Very strong technical and data skills; must be proficient in Excel and able to learn new software coding skills, such as ResQ, R / Python, SQL, Copilot, etc.
- Demonstrate analytical skills and offer creative solutions to business questions as well as capability to improve efficiency and transparency of work process.
- Proactive individual, who challenges existing processes and can influence others and drive a process to a conclusion while meeting critical deadlines.
- Strong verbal/written communication skills; must be able to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences both internal and external to company.
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$147,440 - $221,160
