This position could be a Director & Actuary or Director & Assistant Actuary depending on the skills and experience of the candidate.

The position is part of the Spectrum actuarial team which provides support for $2.2B of Commercial Multi-Peril business for The Hartford's Small Commercial business segment. Our Spectrum BOP product is proprietary to The Hartford and is regarded as the market leader. Additionally, the team supports the growth and development of Small Commercial's Multi-Peril E&S offering. As we operate in both a fluid and competitive industry, we continuously innovate the line and create product / coverage improvements that meet the ever-changing needs of our customers and to remain ahead of our competitors.

This role reports to the Spectrum Actuarial AVP and will partner closely with both the Small Commercial Product Management and E&S organizations. The candidate will lead a team that develops and then executes on the countrywide rate strategy for The Hartford's various Spectrum products that are currently in market, which will require about 50% of available time. Additionally, the candidate will provide thought partnership and actuarial leadership to the Small Commercial E&S leadership team as we continue to grow this segment of the business.

This individual will manage a staff of four to five individuals. The ideal candidate is results driven with a commitment to meeting deadlines. They will attend to detail and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. A strong technical background is required with strong leadership skills and the ability to influence.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage actuarial team responsible for rate execution across all states and Spectrum products.
  • Develop and execute countrywide rate strategy for the various Spectrum products.
  • Drive innovation regarding filing tools and processes to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Advance our analytic and monitoring capabilities for the E&S product offering.
  • Through partnership with E&S leadership, recommend and execute pricing strategy.
  • Evaluate new and existing opportunities in the E&S space.
  • Present results of work product to various leaders in Actuarial, Product, and Underwriting, among others

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree with a major in mathematics, actuarial science, or related field of study.
  • FCAS preferred, but open to candidates with appropriate knowledge background.
  • Minimum 5 years of property and casualty insurance actuarial experience. Business owners insurance experience is a plus, but not necessary.
  • Knowledge of actuarial pricing techniques
  • Must have 2+ years of people management experience.
  • Demonstrated technical/analytical skills; High proficiency in Excel required and experience with R/SQL preferred.
  • Effective oral and written communications skills.
  • Independently motivated; constantly looks for areas to add value.
  • Teamwork skills including ability to effectively collaborate with and influence individuals at different organizational levels.

Location:
This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement. Candidates who live near one of our office locations will have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$127,040 - $211,680

The posted salary range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
