The Central Reliability and Automation team is seeking an accomplished and visionary Director of Platform Engineering to lead our efforts in creating, architecting and delivering a cutting-edge developer portal and platform, ensuring the utmost security, efficiency, and resiliency across our IT solutions. In this pivotal role, you will oversee the design and management of developer portals, integration of developer tools, and alignment of automation frameworks utilized by our engineering teams. Your responsibilities will encompass defining functional and non-functional requirements in collaboration with stakeholders, leveraging both Open Source and Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products to build robust solutions that meet current and future demands.

As a strategic leader, you will champion a "build-to-manage" approach, fostering a culture of problem-solving and innovation throughout the design, development, and maintenance lifecycle. Your deep engineering expertise will be instrumental in driving the creation of developer portals that prioritize security, efficiency, and resiliency. Key performance indicators will include the stability of our customer's services, deployment interval and quality, technical debt reduction, and proactive measures to enhance asset resiliency and mitigate risk. As the Director of Platform Engineering, you will play a pivotal role in advancing our SRE practice, setting top quartile operating norms, and ensuring continuous improvement in our platform engineering capabilities. Additionally, you will establish and monitor developer efficiency metrics such as golden signals, error budgets, and patterns for cloud-native services, driving optimal performance and productivity across our engineering teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Spearhead the strategic design and oversight of a developer portal and integration with sub-platforms such as observability suites, automation frameworks, and configuration management systems, ensuring their alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define and prioritize functional and non-functional requirements, the creation of a roadmap, and guiding the development of solutions tailored to meet evolving business needs.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and problem-solving throughout the platform engineering lifecycle, driving the adoption of best practices and methodologies.
  • Utilize advanced engineering expertise to architect developer portals that track data-driven prioritization of security, efficiency, and resiliency, leveraging both open-source and commercial solutions.
  • Implement and monitor developer efficiency metrics, including golden signals and error budgets, to optimize the performance and productivity of engineering teams.
  • Lead the establishment of top quartile operating norms, continuously refining platform engineering capabilities to meet evolving industry standards.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven leadership experience in platform engineering roles, with a focus on strategic design and management of developer portals, observability suites, and automation frameworks.
  • Expertise in public cloud-native technologies, encompassing containerization, microservices architecture, and serverless computing.


  • Strong familiarity with SRE principles and methodologies, demonstrated through the implementation of proactive monitoring strategies and performance optimization techniques.
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, enabling effective engagement with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Track record of driving innovation and continuous improvement in platform engineering practices, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability.
  • Experience in team leadership and mentorship, cultivating a collaborative and high-performing engineering environment.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$224,800 - $337,200
