Job Description

Taunton State Hospital is seeking a Steam Fireman with experience in low pressure (I5 psi) set of boilers which are controlled by "C B Hawk" computers with more emphasis on maintenance of engineering systems.

Please Note: This position is 40 hours per week. The incumbent will work on the evening shift from 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. The days off are Wednesday and Thursday.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties and responsibilities are not all inclusive):

  • Checks, inspects and monitors various machinery, equipment and systems such as boilers, heat control valves, steam traps, pumps, compressors, generators, chemical and oil tanks, heaters, water softeners, smoke recorders, fans, heat exchangers, exhaust systems, air conditioning and ventilation, motor bearings, smoke stack, storage tanks, gas delivery systems, fire alarm and smoke detector systems, sprinkler systems, hydrants, stand pipes, pneumatic controls, electrical equipment, refrigeration equipment, chillers, water & sewer distribution systems and street lighting systems. Enters information in power plant log.
  • Performs emergency maintenance during off hours when other trades and support service people are off campus to either repair or secure work unsafe condition events. Calls the Director of Support Services if unable to secure the unsafe condition. Calls in other trades or outside vendors if directed to do so.
  • Enters, updates and removes work orders into the Facilities Maintenance Management System for Preventive Maintenance and Non-Scheduled Maintenance work items.
  • Operates the power plant and heating system as relief man to give continuous coverage where possible. Reports to the Director of Support Services any events which would not permit this coverage so that he can make a determination of how to proceed.
  • Does the housekeeping and keeps the power plant area of the new shop/power plant building clean and free of hazards, safe and tidy. The same is true of the other heat generation and heat control areas in other buildings throughout the campus.
  • Repairs boilers, fans, pumps, compressors, turbines, heaters, HVAC equipment and related appurtenances. Notifies the Facility Director or Institutional Maintenance Foreman when outside services must be called in to assist in these tasks.
  • Works with outside vendors who have inspection and maintenance contracts on the various engineering systems throughout the campus.
  • Operates the White Way Street Lighting System.
  • Checks water levels and pressures in the new Pump House.

Required Qualifications:

  • Principles of operation of industrial type heating systems and pneumatic controls used in HVAC systems.
  • Knowledge of calibration and/or adjustment techniques as applied to pneumatic control systems and uses of precision measuring equipment like manometers, voltmeters, etc.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques used in firing gas/oil boilers.

Taunton State Hospital (TSH) operated by the Department of Mental Health (DMH) is a 62-bed inpatient facility that provides continuing care inpatient services to adults with major mental illnesses. The hospital is a leader in the successful integration of the Principles of Recovery and a rehabilitation philosophy into the treatment model and a part of the Southeast Area which works closely with the inpatient treatment teams to facilitate patients' discharge back to the community.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a current and valid First or Second-Class Steam Firemans license issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety, pursuant to Chapter 146 of the Massachusetts General Laws.

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate's years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division's Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
