Job Description

Tewksbury Hospital operated by the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (DMH) is seeking a dynamic rehabilitation counselor to provide person centered and trauma informed Recovery and Rehabilitation Services to individuals of the Northeast Area who have psychiatric needs.

The selected candidate will provide quality Rehabilitation Services in accordance with The Rehab Department Tewksbury Hospital, DMH and The Joint Commission standards (TJC).

Hours: TUE-SAT 11:30AM-8:00PM, Days off: SUN/MON

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable state and federal laws including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) regulations which govern the privacy and confidentiality of information about patients.
  • Promote and support a recovery and resiliency model of Rehabilitation by implementing SAMHSA's 10 fundamental components of recovery, while providing services.
  • Adheres to procedures and policies of Tewksbury Hospital, the Psychiatric Units, and the Rehab Center.
  • Uses a person-centered approach when providing Rehab services and assists and supports the development and implementation of a person-centered treatment plan.
  • Provides services and opportunities that promote continuity of care, community integration and ensure a recovery facilitating environment.
  • Assists individuals served in developing individualized and person-centered rehabilitation/recovery goals and schedules and provides support in monitoring progress toward goals.
  • May function as the Rehab Representative by participating actively on a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with other professionals, contributing to the master treatment plan, and completing documentation
  • Promotes teamwork by demonstrating flexibility, the ability to listen to the views of others, to compromise, manage conflict and stay focused on positive outcomes.
  • Perform related duties as required

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated skill with psychiatrically disabled clients.
  • Ability to design and evaluate assigned program curriculum.
  • Ability to order and maintain sufficient supplies for assigned program.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practice of rehabilitation as it relates to persons with mental illness and dual diagnosed.
  • Ability to evaluate patient's skill and interest to establish goals and independent rehab programs.
  • Ability to interact with persons we serve as well as staff in a professional and effective manner.
  • Exercises group leadership and provide instruction and training.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing professionally; maintain accurate records and other patient and/or program related information.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures followed in general for rehab activities.
  • Ability to problem-solve and maintain a professional manner in difficult and/or emergency situations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to demonstrate a positive, non-judgmental, and accepting attitude toward individuals with variety of mental health needs and substance use disorder.
  • Self-motivated with strong organizational skills and superior attention to detail.
  • Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.

About Tewksbury Hospital:

Tewksbury Hospital operates a 370-bed facility and a campus of over 700 acres of land. Its patient care services are provided under the auspices of the Department of Public Health and Mental Health. Joint Commission accredited LTAC hospital that provides high quality, comprehensive treatment, care, and comfort to adults with chronic medical and mental illness. A full range of services are provided including 24/7 Nursing, Nurse Practitioners, Medicine as well as psychiatric and psychological services, a 6- bed dialysis unit, clinical laboratory, radiology, respiratory care, nutrition, speech/language, pathology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, therapeutic recreation and arts, and pharmacy.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

REQUIRED WORK EXPERIENCE: At least two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional or paraprofessional experience in social work, social casework, vocational counseling, employment counseling, rehabilitation counseling, or educational counseling.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

- A Bachelor's or higher degree in rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation counseling, education of the physically or emotionally handicapped, education of the multiple handicapped, education of the learning disabled, social work, psychology, human services, or counseling may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of two years of education for one year of experience.

- A Bachelor's or higher degree in a major other than rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation counseling, education of the physically or emotionally handicapped, education of the multiple handicapped, education of the learning disabled, social work, psychology, human services, or counseling may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience on the basis of four years of education for one year of experience.

- Licensure as a Licensed Rehabilitation Counselor by the Board of Registration of Allied Mental Health Professionals or Certification as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification may be substituted for the required experience.

- One year of education equals 30 semester hours. Education toward a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed
