Job Description

The Department of Mental Health (DMH), Tewksbury Hospital is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Registered Nurse Supervisor to work with resilient patients navigating their journey on the road to recovery. The incumbent will assume charge nurse responsibility to provide continuity of care.

Please note: this position is 40 hours per week. The incumbent will work 3rd shift schedule 11:15pm-7:15am, Days off, week I: TUE/SAT, week II: SUN/THU

Employees in this position will be required to perform mandatory overtime

Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and not all inclusive):

• Provides nursing care for patients by following professional, hospital, departmental and certification standards in order to maintain quality care.

• Identifies and addresses patient needs by performing nursing assessments, developing nursing interventions and participating in team meetings to facilitate discharge.

• Provides for the supervision of staff through individual counseling and/or regular staff meetings; through appropriate role modeling and overseeing the orientation process.

• Participates in the progressive disciplinary process as required.

• Receives and delivers hospital wide report on patient status and administrative concerns to provide continuity of care.

• Oversees professional and para-professional staffing coverage based on staffing resources and patient needs and maintains records of the same to ensure optimal level of care delivery.

• Provides ongoing supervision of nursing staff to provide a positive role model.

• Makes frequent rounds of hospital units to assess patient status, staff performance of duties and physical environment to ensure compliance with federal and state laws and regulations.

• Participates in and responds to emergency situations according to established policies and procedures to maintain a safe environment.

• Exercises independent judgment and makes decisions based on knowledge of general principles of psychiatric nursing.

• Investigates and completes patient and/or staff accident/injury reports, complaints and incident reports, incorporating all appropriate actions.

• Provides psychosocial support to patients through individual counseling and group work to maintain the therapeutic milieu.

• Facilitates the implementation of treatment plans by interdisciplinary team by conferring with appropriate health care professionals in order to meet the stated goal for each patient.

• Supervises employees of a lesser grade by assigning tasks, based on individual competencies, evaluating performance and making recommendations concerning performance to maintain a high level of quality care.

• Ensures compliance with established standards for and quality of documentation systems, which include patient records, patient care plans and restraint forms, ensuring that all nursing policies and procedures are carried out in a consistent manner.

• Maintains and communicates to nursing staff through knowledge of DMH, CMS, and JCAHO and HIPAA standards in order to maintain standards of care.

• Practices Principals of CARE, including controlled takedown, Restraint/Seclusion when necessary to provide a safe environment.

• Actively participates in the Improved Organizational Performance process at the unit and hospital wide level to improve the quality of care.

• Performs other related duties as required.

Required Qualifications:

• Demonstrates expertise in patient care and assignment

• Knowledge of interviewing techniques

• Experience with The Joint Commission, DMH, DPH, CMS requirements for healthcare and administration

• The ability to evaluate nursing practices

• Experience with the principles and practices of supervision

• Knowledge of the of healthcare administration

Preferred Qualifications

• Given the population we serve, bilingual or multilingual fluency

Tewksbury Hospital operates a 370-bed facility and a campus of over 700 acres of land. Its patient care services are provided under the auspices of the Department of Public Health and Mental Health. Joint Commission accredited LTAC hospital that provides high quality, comprehensive treatment, care, and comfort to adults with chronic medical and mental illness. A full range of services are provided including 24/7 Nursing, Nurse Practitioners, Medicine as well as psychiatric and psychological services, a 6- bed dialysis unit, clinical laboratory, radiology, respiratory care, nutrition, speech/language, pathology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, therapeutic recreation and arts, and pharmacy.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience. No substitutions will be allowed for the required (B) experience.

Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES:Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.

Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
