Flood Vulnerability and Environmental Justice Intern

Job Description

The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages one of the largest and most diverse state parks systems in the nation and protects and enhances natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout Massachusetts. DCR is a dynamic agency, and is one of the largest park systems in the nation. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, golf courses, trails and parkways.

Under direction of the Massachusetts Water Resources Commission, DCR is tasked as the Commonwealth agency with responsibility for implementing the National Flood Insurance Program requirements. The intern will be part of the Flood Hazard Management Program at DCR and will also have the opportunity to work with a diverse and dynamic project team.

The Department of Conservation and Recreation is seeking applicants for the position of Flood Vulnerability & Environmental Justice Intern.

Salary is $21/hour. Position runs from June 3, 2024 - August 16, 2024. Most work will be remote, but some in-person meetings and field visits will be required.

Brief Description of Internship Position:

The intern will assist with a new state project focused on the intersection between flood-vulnerable populations and environmental justice in Massachusetts communities. This work includes collaboration with a multidisciplinary project team comprised of state officials and external project partners with expertise in community engagement, planning, engineering, and mapping. The project team is working on flood vulnerability assessment, environmental justice community engagement, and the development of data and maps that will help local communities, the state, and the public develop a better understanding of local flood hazards and options for solutions. The intern will assist project managers in DCR and EEA with project coordination, additional research, and compilation of inclusive outreach materials. Over the summer, the intern will develop and complete a research or communications project based on their skills and interests.

Description of Duties and Responsibilities:

The intern will meet with their supervisor at least once per week during the internship. The intern will be expected to 1) attend biweekly and other meetings with the project managers and project team, 2) read and summarize various project documents, 3) provide additional research on specific topics as needed 4) compile inclusive outreach materials, including imagery, and 5) develop and complete a research or communications product for the project.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills:

The intern must have enthusiasm to learn about Environmental Justice, flood vulnerability, and an interest in public service. Knowledge about general computer and internet use is required, and the intern must be able to access the internet regularly for this work. The intern should have professional communication abilities; ability to participate in virtual and/or in-person meetings with state and external project partners; ability to follow directions with common precision; ability to use Word, Teams, and other Microsoft Office products. An understanding of environmental justice, community engagement, and experience with project management, research, and communications is helpful but not required.
