The Senior Engineer, Power Electronics Solutions will lead AES's technical strategy for power electronic converter specification and integration in inverter-based resources. They will provide guidance on selection of equipment used in our GW-scale clean energy fleet, find opportunities for innovation with our plant design, lead evaluation and support testing of new technologies, and work closely with our vendors to supervise their product offerings as well as iterate on them to improve competitiveness and ability to meet our customer's needs. This is an opportunity to work through exciting technical problems, play a key role in crafting AES's power electronics technology strategy, analyze and test new technologies, and ultimately advance the goal of reaching 100% clean energy.

Key responsibilities include:

Monitor current product lines available from suppliers for power electronics converters, including inverters and DC-DC converters:

Identify new technologies and companies of interest to pursue at AES to enhance the competitiveness of our products and enable achievement of AES's aggressive clean energy goals.

Keep track of vendor's roadmaps and product retirements and communicate that information to AES broadly.

Collect and curate information on vendors' products, including specification sheets, manuals, etc.

Lead the maintenance of minimum technical requirements for our power electronics products from our vendors.

Collaborate with vendors to implement new solutions that could support product offerings meeting AES's needs based on the experiences and upcoming requirements of AES.

Identify and handle opportunities for intellectual property regarding the design and application of power electronics in AES plants

Conduct technology evaluation and scoring of power electronic converters to qualify products for use in our projects.

Conduct techno-economic analysis and other analyses in service of developing equipment selection guidelines to support AES's development and execution engineers in selection of products for use in AES's clean energy projects.

Serve as a domain expert in power electronics to answer questions from AES design, execution, and operations teams, support or lead root cause analysis of new issues observed with power electronics equipment in AES's operating fleet, provide or support trainings on new power electronics technologies, and advice on strategic decisions around power electronics supply and innovation.

Review and provide guidance to test plans to de-risk new inverters and DC-DCs at AES's testbeds and/or partner facilities.

Document lessons learned and leading practices.

Qualifications:

Master's degree or equivalent experience or higher in engineering with a power electronics focus.

Proven experience (at least 5 years) in power electronics for renewable energy (inverter-based resources), which could include technology evaluation, product design, operations, etc.

Ability to conduct evaluation of different vendor-supplied power electronics technology solutions, including evaluating product design, performance, operability, safety, and technical manufacturing trade-offs.

Familiarity with interconnection grid codes and standards (UL1741, IEEE1547, IEEE2800, etc.)

Hands-on experience installing, maintaining, or testing power electronics

Strong communication skills, including the ability to work with and communicate effectively (including listening) across a diverse set of engineering, operations, and supply chain teams at AES as well as develop reports and presentations explaining technology evaluations and scoring, root cause analyses, etc.

Good organizational skills.

Dedicated and sense of ownership over creating power electronics that enable a strong set of operating projects at AES and advancing innovations within the company to improve project competitiveness and meet our customer's and communities' needs.

Experience with techno-economic analysis preferred.

The expected salary for this position, at commencement of employment, is between $115.000 and $144.500/Annual; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements such as annual bonus, in addition to a full range of medical, dental, vision, life, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if a candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an "at-will position" and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
