Sr. Financial Reporting Analyst - Remote

Symetra's Enterprise Financial Reporting department is looking to add a new Senior Financial Reporting Analyst to our external reporting team!

About the role

A student of the business, you'll develop in-depth knowledge of the insurance industry, investments, and other complex issues. You will provide technical expertise to the team in support of new or complex transactions and reporting requirements and assist in the implementation of new accounting guidance and complex transactions under GAAP and Statutory rules. You will also play a role in preparing and reviewing Symetra's quarterly and annual GAAP financial statements, analyzing quarterly results, and preparing/reviewing other external and management reports. The Senior Analyst will have the unique opportunity to work with a variety of people throughout the organization, building relationships in Finance, Actuarial and Business Areas.

What you'll do in this role

External Reporting

  • Prepare and review the Company's GAAP and Statutory Financial Statements and External Reports
    • Prepare and review tie-out support gathered from multiple departments
    • Benchmark peers to recommend and apply best practices
  • Research and facilitate implementation of new GAAP and Statutory reporting and disclosure requirements
  • Execute internal controls and maintain related documentation for external reporting

Technical Accounting

  • Perform technical accounting research related to ad-hoc questions and new or complex transactions
    • Research and propose appropriate accounting treatment under GAAP and Statutory accounting
    • Coordinate with other Finance teams to support transaction needs
    • Document and/or review related accounting policy memos and presentations
    • Discuss issues and coordinate with external auditors, as appropriate
  • Assist in the implementation of new accounting guidance:
    • Develop subject matter expertise for technical requirements of accounting guidance
    • Identify new GAAP and Statutory guidance and interpretations affecting Symetra
    • Assist in the development and execution of project plans for implementation, working with relevant teams within Finance and Business Areas
    • Develop and propose recommendations where judgement in application is required

Compensation

Salary Range: $73,200- $122,000 plus eligibility for the company annual bonus program.

Requirements

Your education, skills and experience

  • A BA/BS in Accounting, or Finance
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience, preferably in public accounting or with exposure to public company reporting
  • CPA or CPA-eligible, preferred
  • Experience with the preparation of financial statement and footnote disclosures
  • Technical accounting research skills and the desire to use them - analyzing, documenting, and supporting conclusions
  • Exposure to internal controls over financial reporting and related documentation
  • High expectations for themselves, with an irresistible urge to exceed them
  • Creativity, problem solving, and decision-making skills
  • Good time management, capable of planning and prioritizing multiple tasks while meeting deadlines under pressure
  • A positive attitude and sense of humor!
  • Experience in the financial services or insurance industry is preferred
