Become a Senior Attorney for Real Estate and Land Use at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. In this job, you'll lead real property transactions for the acquisition, disposition and management of SCE's real property assets, resolve real property disputes pre-litigation, interpret real property rights, analyze and resolve land use and government relations issues and provide general advice and counsel to SCE's Real Property and Corporate Real Estate organizations, as well as other organizational units at SCE, including Transmission and Distribution and Local Public Affairs. Among other things, the position involves: a) interpreting, negotiating and drafting a wide variety of real estate related agreements including purchase and sale agreements, leases, licenses, easements, franchises, entry permits and agreements with public agencies; b) providing legal guidance to resolve conflicts relative to access, utility infrastructure installation and maintenance and vegetation management; c) representing SCE before city, county, state and federal governments on various land use issues including permitting for utility infrastructure construction and maintenance; and d) advising internal client organizations and project teams regarding compliance with applicable laws and policies and identifying legal and business risks.

The successful candidate will handle or assist in a wide range of real property, land use and government relations issues for the company and will report to a Director/Managing Attorney. You must be able to work independently, be attentive to detail, identify legal and business risks, draft agreements and correspondence quickly and clearly and confidently negotiate with other parties.

We also are seeking a candidate who has the ability to simultaneously manage a large variety of assignments, work quickly and effectively under pressure, and prioritize activities.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts complex legal analysis to craft strategies and interpretations which anticipate the outcome of important and uncertain legal and factual issues, ensuring legal compliance.
  • Leads the development and implementation of legal strategies and SCE's position on changes in laws and regulations.
  • Collaborates with the most senior levels of SCE and represents the company at significant public, business and legal gatherings, interacting with government officials, industry bodies and clients, as required.
  • Develops SCE's legal strategy to select, retain, manage and evaluate effective outside counsel
  • Guides corporate policy on regulation development, business processes, safety, ethics and compliance, operational efficiency, future business models, with business acumen, creativity, and legal expertise.
  • Leads the provision of legal advice on aspects of corporate development and strategic initiatives while driving cross-functional alignment.
  • Regulatory Sr Attorney conducts all aspects of regulatory litigation, which includes leading legal strategy and preparing all pleadings.
  • Regulatory Sr Attorney leads SCE regarding regulatory and enforcement agencies, including the California Public Utilities Commission and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on complex legal matters, including the drafting and preparing of regulatory filings, testimonies and reports and advocating company positions at hearings.
  • Transactional Sr Attorney oversees the execution, structuring, drafting, reviewing and negotiation of complex agreements, including identifying legal and business risks and recommending solutions.
  • Securities/Corporate Governance Sr Attorney oversees compliance with federal and state securities laws and corporate governance requirements, including identifying legal and business risks and recommending solutions.
  • Litigation Sr Attorney oversees the organization's docket of litigation and investigation matters, ensuring a sound strategy for engaging with outside counsel and internal legal teams.
  • A material job duty of all positions within the Company is ensuring the protection of all its physical, financial and cybersecurity assets, and properly accessing and managing private customer data, proprietary information, confidential medical records, and other types of highly sensitive information and data with the highest standards of conduct and integrity.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Eight or more years of experience practicing law. Your combined experience can be at a law firm, corporate in-house setting, or government authority.
  • Current member in good standing of the State Bar of California or willingness and ability to become accredited as such.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Core real estate experience including the negotiation, drafting and interpretation of purchase and sale agreements, leases, licenses, and easements.
  • General land use and permitting experience.
  • Experience appearing before elected officials and municipal staff, including appearing and providing testimony at public hearings and negotiating with public agency counsel, to support a wide range of company initiatives.
  • Experience interacting with non-lawyer, business and technical clients.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team including the ability to promote positive cooperation within the legal team, with other Company personnel, and with outside counsel.

Additional Information

  • This position's work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days.\u202f Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to work and reside in the state of California.\u202f Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage. The work mode can be changed based on business needs.
