We are seeking a Senior Director of Engineering to oversee our Productivity engineering organization. The Productivity group is responsible for the bundle of capabilities that augment Slack's core channel-based messaging platform with additional content types and communication modes, including native documents (canvas), structured data (lists), video conferencing (huddles), and 3P files. This role will oversee all Productivity engineering, developing and evolving these features and managing the leaders and engineering teams who build them. The ideal candidate will excel at:

  • Providing strategic direction and support to help teams address crucial business and technical challenges
  • Making smart decisions to optimize business priorities, technical sustainability, team engagement, and customer needs
  • Mentoring engineering managers and engineers in their professional development

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with cross-functional partners to define and execute product and technical strategy for the organization, in alignment with higher-level business goals
  • Create and execute plans to improve how we support our engineering teams through both immediate solutions and long-term strategies
  • Find and address ways to help engineering teams improve their system reliability, performance, and efficiency
  • Plan and deliver system improvements that enhance features, scalability and dependability for our customers
  • Work across departments to complete major projects successfully
  • Maintain clear communication with team members and leadership at all levels
  • Foster an inclusive environment where team members can openly discuss and learn from technical issues
  • Manage a 100+ person engineering organization with 2 levels of subordinate management

Required Qualifications:

  • Engineering management experience of 15+ years, with preference for those who have led frontend and backend teams
  • Engineering management experience leading a large organization, including managing managers, multiple teams, and senior engineers simultaneously
  • Proficiency in software development methodologies, technologies, and tools, with proven success in leading and delivering large-scale initiatives working with cross-functional teams
  • Extensive experience in SaaS application engineering
  • Strong technical foundation enabling effective team leadership and mentorship of engineering talent
  • Proven experience collaborating with customers, executives, and business stakeholders
  • Commitment to and experience with inclusive hiring and team-building practices
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to effectively manage competing priorities and make clear decisions
  • Comfortable operating at both strategic and tactical levels
  • Strong business acumen and ability to balance technical and business considerations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing enterprise software
  • Experience developing communications and/or productivity software
  • Experience integrating and scaling AI-assisted or ML-powered experiences
  • Experience with development platforms and services (e.g., microservices, APIs)
  • Proven track record of operating effectively in a large organization, with multiple sibling / stakeholder teams and executive relationships

For New York-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $251,900 to $384,100.

For California-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $251,900 to $384,100.

Compensation offered will be determined by factors such as location, level, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Certain roles may be eligible for incentive compensation, equity, benefits.
