Position Summary / Job Purpose:

Assist the Director Nautical Operations in carrying out the day to day Nautical Operations. Manage and coordinate shipboard/shoreside navigation and manage career progression of deck officers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for career tracking and development of deck officers including training records, training requirements and future assignments. This function is in close cooperation with the Director Nautical Operations and the Fleet Captain.

Work with the Director Nautical Operations and HR schedulers on scheduling of deck officers.

Work with talent acquisition on hiring and interviewing deck officer and cadet candidates.

Ensure that each new hired Employee is holding certificates, licenses, and training in accordance to Flag State regulations and company policy before being hired.

Responsible for fleet wide navigational safety support, including equipment and software. Liaise with Technical services and Ship Managers to ensure condition reports, repairs and upgrades are made on all Bridge Nautical Equipment.

Responsible for fleet wide nautical support (i.e. charts, ECDIS, VDR, GMDSS, AIS, pilot books, ship's library, bridge design, etc.).

Monitors vessels stability and makes recommendations for improvements. Responsible for the shore-side support of NAPA programs, including services and upgrades.

Responsible to set up minimum standards of inventory levels of nautical supplies for new ships entering service.

Keep up to date, explore and evaluate new software and technologies pertaining to fuel efficiency and voyage/route optimization. This in close cooperation with Energy Management.

Work closely with the Maritime Safety Department supporting as necessary investigations of navigation related incidents/accidents and safety bulletins.

Remain current with current and expected SOLAS, ILO and STCW regulations and initiate required actions for compliance as well as keeping open and continuous communication with Flag State, Class Authorities, and Port State in all navigation and related safety matters.

Work as an active member on the Navigation Working Group (NWG) with respect to policy revision, suggestions, feedback, and continuous improvement.

Represent the fleet at various industry meetings regard to navigation and related safety issues.

Expected to support the role of Director, Nautical Operations in his/her absence.

Education, Experience, Knowledge & Skills:

Position requires a nautical education with minimum 12 years of service with a major shipping company as Deck Officer or equivalent Nautical shore side position.

Unlimited Masters License preferred. Minimum requirement is a chief Officer license unlimited. A college degree or diploma in a nautical related field is preferred.

Very strong computer skills and excellent knowledge of MS Office programs.

Ability to work independently, as well as part of a cohesive team

Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Ability to travel throughout the Fleet and spend required time on a variety of vessels.

Possess excellent time management and organization skills with the ability to multitask and manage in a fast-paced environment. Possess a highly advanced ability to speak English clearly, distinctly and cordially, including the ability to interact with crewmembers and management, respond to questions and speak in front of groups of all sizes.

Ability to read and write English in order to understand and interpret written procedures. Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate in a multicultural environment with all levels of employees and management; prior experience in managerial coaching and team building in a similar environment would be helpful. The incumbent will be required to travel periodically.

Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. The incumbent must have the ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conforms to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Ability to give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms and to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, supervisors and co-workers.

Internal Candidate Requirements:

5+ years of employment at sea within our fleet.
