TRAINING DATE:June 27, 2024 - All Staff Orientation

DUTY DAYS/HOURS:Monday - Friday 8:45 AM - 12:15 PM

LOCATION(S):Franklin, Grant, McDaniel, Roosevelt

*Specific assignment locations will be discussed later in the hiring process.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Portland Summer Scholars is a high school credit recovery program for students who need to retake a course required for graduation. The pace of our program is somewhat intense in nature, due to the condensed time frame we operate in. While most semester courses meet over the span of 18 weeks, our Summer Scholars classes meet for 3 hours per day for 13 days straight. Students will earn .5 credit for each class they successfully complete.

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the general direction of the Building Administrator, the Academic Tutor provides support to students enrolled in Summer Scholars. All Summer Scholars staff follow the Portland Public Schools policies, rules, and regulations.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Assist students with academic work, both individually and in group settings.
  2. Collaborate and coordinate with classroom teachers to ensure all students receive adequate and effective academic support to achieve at high levels. (lead tutor to organize)
  3. Flexibly use multiple strategies to engage/meet the needs of students with diverse learning styles.
  4. Apply culturally relevant strategies for interacting with and assisting students.
  5. Help students develop organizational and prioritization strategies.
  6. Redirect students to help them stay on-task and actively engaged in instruction.
  7. Assist the teacher in organizing the classroom.
  8. Make daily calls to families of absent students in coordination with office staff and administration. (lead tutor to organize)
  9. Act proactively to check in with teachers and students regarding classroom support needed.
  10. Manage after school tutorial. (lead tutor to organize)
  11. Manage and supervise meal time for breakfast and lunch each day. (lead tutor to organize)
  12. Assist with set up and tear down for Summer Scholars, including preparing teacher supplies, room signs, and classroom set up.
  13. Perform additional office responsibilities as assigned by administrator.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High School Diploma required.

Must also currently hold one of the following to meet ESSA guidelines:
  • Associate Degree or
  • Two years full time college course-work (72 quarter hours or 48 semester hours) or
  • Passing score on the ParaPro Praxis exam

Work Experience: Minimum of two years of work experience with adolescents preferred.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral communication.
  • Ability to apply culturally relevant strategies when assisting students and when interacting with students, staff, and parents.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, instructional staff, and parents.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Ability to demonstrate standards of moral character and behavior as required of teachers (e.g., to serve as an effective role model for students).

Language Requirement: Bilingual Spanish preferred

Pay Rate: Current PPS employees who work the same summer position as their regular school year position will be paid their current hourly rate of pay, but not less than the hourly summer school rate. All other hires will be paid $19.27 per hour.
