POSITION SUMMARY

Substitute School Counselors are valued members of the Portland Public Schools community who play an integral role in supporting the students and school communities of Portland Public Schools. Working as a Substitute School Counselor with Portland Public Schools requires high flexibility and adaptability. Substitute School Counselors are eligible to work throughout the district in any school, and any grade level with the ability to assign themselves to jobs that fit their schedule.

A Substitute School Counselor provides academic and interpersonal assistance to students at an elementary, middle, K-8, high, and/or alternative school. Utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, Substitute School Counselors promote student success, provide preventive services, and respond to identified student needs by assisting in implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic, career, and personal/social development for all students.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
  • Provide support to students through their planned and sequential school counseling program
  • Offer academic development support, participate in and recommend interventions for at-risk students, and collaborate with special education and ELL case managers.
  • Assist students with personal and social development; provide information about community resources; counsel individuals and groups on social or personal issues.
  • Support the development of cultural sensitivity and respect for individual differences, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Communicate with staff and designated personnel regarding individual student issues and concerns.
  • Manage student behavior and maintain discipline following school, district, and state policies, procedures, and laws.
  • Advocate, model, and implement Portland Public Schools Racial Educational Equity policy.
  • Assist students in exploring personal abilities, interests, and skills to design academic plans and life goals; provide access to college and career information.
  • Operate various school and office equipment, computer technologies, and software
  • Display judgment that supports professional standards of conduct at all times.
  • Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must hold an Active Oregon School Counselor license issued by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC).

PAY RATE

Substitute Counselors are paid based on half days and full days. The full-day rate is $247.58, and the half-day rate is $123.79.
