POSITION SUMMARY

Substitute Paraeducators are valued members of the Portland Public Schools community who play an integral role in supporting our students and schools every day. Working as a Substitute with Portland Public Schools requires a high level of flexibility and adaptability, as Substitutes are eligible to work throughout the district in any school, any subject, and any grade level. Substitute Paraeducators work a flexible schedule on an as-needed basis, and have the ability to assign themselves to jobs via the Absence Management system up to one month in advance.

Substitute Paraeducators support the instructional program developed and directed by Special Education teacher(s) and/or specialist(s) for students with developmental and educational disabilities from K-12 through age 21. Services may include specially designed instruction and related services, behavioral guidance and/or management, and/or physical management of students. Substitute Paraeducators can be placed in a variety of classrooms and grade levels.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
  • Participate as an effective team member in a manner that promotes collaboration for student success
  • Implement complex instructional strategies in the classroom and in on-campus learning environments
  • As applicable, assist with modification, development, and/or preparation of learning strategies, materials, and activities to accommodate different learning styles, ability levels, and other learning needs of students
  • Implement and modify behavioral strategies with students that are consistent with classroom and building behavioral goals
  • Carry out functional (informal) assessment activities to document information about learner strengths and needs.
  • Perform support tasks to enhance effectiveness of the learning environment
  • Provide physical assistance to students with disabilities which may include toileting, changing, feeding, lifting, and supervising a variety of student activities including playground, cafeteria, and bus loading
  • Comply with all applicable district, state, and federal policies, procedures, and regulations
  • Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • 2 years full-time college coursework to meet the NCLB/ESEA requirements. Please attach a copy of your Unofficial Transcripts to your application in order to be considered for this position. Please be advised that official sealed transcripts notating credits earned will be required upon being hired. For those who do not have college credits, applicants who successfully pass the ParaPro Assessment test through ETS before submitting an application will be eligible for hire.
  • Requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50lbs. May also require the ability to restrain 50 to 100lbs. Requires continuous reaching, bending, crouching, twisting, kneeling, and the repetitive use of arms, hands, wrists, and legs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 1 or more years of experience working in an educational setting and/or working with students with developmental and educational disabilities
  • 2 or more years of experience working with diverse student populations in an educational setting, training or mentoring environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience having a commitment to racial equity and social justice
  • Proven track record of providing effective behavior management skills
  • Bilingual/multilingual individuals who speak Spanish, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, or Vietnamese
  • Alignment with PPS Core Values, Educator Essentials, and Racial Equity & Social Justice
  • Basic technological proficiency - familiarity with Absence Management and G Suite
  • Passion for working in an educational setting supporting students and school communities
  • Ability to welcome and empower students and families, including underrepresented families of color and those whose first language may not be English, as essential partners in student education

PAY RATE

$22.40 per hour
