Job Description

Assists physician during radiographic special procedures. Performs diagnostic and special procedure exams.


Job Responsibility


  • As primary assistant gains knowledge of both performing the various procedures and has familiarity with the instruments/medications used in order to ensure patient safety.

  • Adheres to proper sterile technique at all times prior to and during the procedure. Prepares set up trays and patient preparation prior to procedure.

  • Has primary responsibility for calling time-out prior to start of all procedure or at any point in the procedure when it is required.

  • Maintains a Flouro log for all procedures.

  • Familiarity with catheter and guide wire exchange techniques as well as arterial and venous access.

  • Strong knowledge of the usage of different catheter, guide wire, sheaths, contrasts, carbon dioxide and injector setup.

  • Knowledge of various exams and different types of supply set up needed ex. biopsy, drainage, run-off, angioplasty, etc.

  • Performs proper patient positioning during various stages of an examination.

  • Knowledge of what parts of the procedure are to be imaged and can manipulate images after procedure to provide optimal imaging.

  • Knowledge of and can assist in wound care and dressing related to interventional procedures.

  • Interacts with patients on a professional and compassionate level before, during and after the procedure.

  • Displays knowledge of all contrast agents, their indications and contraindications.

  • Exhibits strong communication skills with fellow technologist, nurses and doctors throughout the institution.

  • Selects proper technical factors relative to procedure, patients size and condition.

  • Recognizes equipment failure troubleshoots basic problems. Notifies appropriate service engineer and management staff.

  • Maintains and expedites patient turnover (request transport, call environmental and informs MD of the next patient in a timely fashion). Maintains work area in a clean and orderly fashion.

  • Works with billing clerk to ensure proper billing for supplies.

  • Maintains logbook for all procedures performed and can file and retrieve from all storage devices.

  • Knowledge of all aspects of patient scheduling, can schedule a patient when necessary.

  • Observes departmental radiation safety procedures to maintain occupational exposure as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA)

  • Demonstrates the ability to obtain information and interpret information in terms of the patients needs as appropriate to the ages of the patients served.

  • Demonstrates the ability to work in a dynamic atmosphere sometimes involving a stressful and strenuous situation.

  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of vascular anatomy.

  • Demonstrates the ability to anticipate the needs of the physician during the procedure.

  • Practice universal precautions with all patients.

  • Maintains Inventory levels and orders supplies when necessary.

  • Follows infection control guidelines set by the institution.

  • Proficient in entering, retrieving and accessing information using the departments RIS system, as well as PACS.

  • Designates assignments and distributes work to transport staff as necessary.

  • Transports patients when necessary to expedite examinations and or patient satisfaction.

  • Interfaces with patient, staff and physicians both within and external to the department to facilitate the improvement of the patient experience in every possible way.

  • Works continuously to improve Press Ganey scores via patient satisfaction.

  • Performs related duties as required.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


    Constant standing, walking. Frequent stooping, bending stretching, lifting positioning, pulling, and transferring patients. Occasional sitting. Frequently lifts or moves objects. Occasionally carries objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Frequently pushes patients or objects up to 200 pounds occasionally moves with assistance patients or objects greater than 250 pounds.


    Job Qualification


    • Graduate from an accredited Radiologic Technology Program, required.

    • New York State Department of Health licensure as a Radiologic Technologist, required.

    • Minimum of two (2) years experience as a Radiology Technologist, required. Competency in one of the following modalities: CT, MRI, or special procedures.



    • Current License to practice as a Certified Radiology Contrast IV Injection practitioner in New York State required.
