Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is seeking Senior Principal Data Scientist - 15467. This is a telecommuter position and will support the Sentinel program. The selected candidate will need to be located near one of our program main sites.
What You'll Get To Do:
Serve as the project lead of the Condition-Based Maintenance Plus Prognostics Analytics Toolset (CBM+ PATS) team. This position supports the effort to modernize the ground-based leg of the United States' nuclear triad, the Sentinel Weapon System (WS), using CBM+, which is the Department of Defense's (DoD) preferred method of maintenance and sustainment for large-scale weapon systems. The individual will be responsible for applying data science and engineering principles to develop a data architecture in support of several flavors of predictive maintenance models on hundreds of unique WS components with potentially thousands of serialized instances of each component. The individual will coordinate closely with the Reliability and Maintenance-Cost (RAM-C) team in support of CBM+ architecture delivery by WS Critical Design Review (CDR), and predictive model delivery on Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) selected components by System Quality and Verification Review (SQVR). In addition to applied data science principles, the individual is expected to have a strong background in project management, project execution, strategic planning, and both customer and executive-facing presentation skills.
Some key responsibilities will be to:
- Develop a data architecture in support of predictive modeling for a large-scale WS designed to operate for 40+ years.
- Conduct a literature review to become a primary CBM+ PATS Point of Contact (POC) for the program.
- Refine the CBM+ roadmap up through WS CDR and SQVR (currently slated for 2028 and 2032 respectively).
- Ensure project execution is mapped to the Integrated Master Schedule (IMS) and Integrated Master Plan (IMP).
- Assign and manage tasking of a team of 5+ data scientists, data engineers, and software engineers to meet critical program milestones.
- Refine CBM+ project requirements in the Sentinel Statement of Work (SOW) and Weapon System Specification (WSS).
- Collaborate with DE data scientists to define a common data architecture across SDS.

This position's standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off. This role does not offer relocation assistance.
Basic Qualifications:
• 8 Years of experience with a Bachelors, 6 Years of experience with a Masters, 4 Years with a PhD or additional 4 years in lieu of degree.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance.
• Must have an ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) approval within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business need.
• Extensive experience with Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) techniques and best practices.
• Proven expertise in cloud-based data architecture and services (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).
• Proficient in designing, implementing, and maintaining end-to-end data pipelines.
• Demonstrated experience leading and mentoring small, cross-functional teams (3-5 members).
• Strong executive and customer communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience with state-of-the-art foundation models (e.g., OpenAI API, GPT-4o) and applying them to business problems.
• Advanced experience developing software solutions to support Bayesian modeling for predicting component remaining-useful-life.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Data Governance and Compliance : The ability to implement data governance practices.
• Business Acumen : Ability to identify key business problems and apply data science solutions to drive business value.
• Project Management : Proficiency in project management methodologies (e.g., Agile, Scrum) for overseeing data science projects.
• Stakeholder Management : Experience managing a range of stakeholders including understanding their needs and expectations.
• Budgeting and Resource Allocation : Experience with budgeting and allocating resources for data science projects.
• Change Management : Skill in managing change and driving adoption of new data-driven technologies and practices within an organization.

Salary Range: $137,400.00 - $206,000.00The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
