Job Description:

The Regional Lab Chemistry Technical Scientist is a chemistry technical expert role which enables standardized and efficient lab operations. The MGS Regional Laboratory is responsible for the delivery of chemistry operational testing capability, laboratory governance and consultancy services for all segments of Mars Incorporated operating in their region. The main customers of the regional lab are Supply (manufacturing sites), Commercial and R&D functions. Reporting to the Regional Chemistry Lab Operations Manager, the Regional Lab Chemistry Technical Scientist is responsible for providing leadership to all aspects of the chemistry lab operations. This position requires the exercise of independent judgement and discretion as well as the use of advanced technical and operational skills. The ability to create collaborative relationships and promote high performance collaboration will be key as the role interacts with the regional lab team, the MGS COE Central Lab team and the Chemistry coordinators of the other MGS Regional Laboratories. Up to 20% global travel with occasional weekends away from home due to the participation to the laboratories audit.

What are we looking for?

  • BS Degree in Chemistry, Biology or Physical Science
  • 5 years performing chemical analyses utilizing one or more analytical techniques such as Mass Spectrometry, Gas and Liquid Chromatography, and ICP-OES.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 17025
  • An understanding of the key scientific principles associated with food systems.
  • Excellent practical laboratory skills. Ability to troubleshoot and maintain complex analytical instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of statistical methods including sampling plans and confidence intervals.

What will be your key responsibilities?

  • Deliver true, accurate results in a timely manner
  • Assist and provide backup to Regional Laboratory Operations Manager in the monitoring and planning support of the regional laboratory
  • Assist and provide backup to Regional Laboratory Operations Manager in managing day to day operations of the lab and emergencies by constantly adapting resources within the laboratory.
  • Identify training needs for unit, updating training matrix for associates within unit.
  • Collaborate with Quality Coordinator to ensure all training records for unit/analysis are completed.
  • Follow KPI's and participate in progress plans.
  • Provide technical advice for analysis.
  • When appropriate, help to write/create documents and records for, and always follow laboratory quality management systems ISO 17025 and Mars Global Laboratory Quality Management System.
  • Technical expertise in the use and application of analytical instrumentation to support routine Quality and Food Safety and R&D support testing.
  • Specific instrumentation knowledgebase to include but not limited to preparative and analytical chromatography, optical spectroscopy.

  • Perform required analytical tests on raw materials, in-process products, finished products and project driven analysis.
  • Stay current with modern technology by attending meetings and short courses.
  • Sample Management and laboratory cleanup.
  • Administration of laboratory operational programs including all new lab safety initiatives, safety training, chemical hygiene plan, chemical inventories, hazardous waste, and overall lab organization/cleanliness.
  • Functions as primary laboratory interface to key external groups including local site safety and all site laboratories.
  • Interfaces with laboratory clients to report data, clarify results interpretation contribute to experimental designs, and recommend future direction. Frequently resolves inconsistent or atypical results in an independent manner or with minimal supervisor assistance.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and lab skills to critically read, interpret and perform documented analytical procedures. Implements appropriate method modifications as required.
  • Recommends, designs and conducts additional laboratory procedures (analytical /standard preparation/sample preparation/shelf-life protocol) depending on project demands.
  • Evaluates ongoing project laboratory needs on a daily basis.
  • Schedules time (personnel and/or temporary/co-op) and general-use lab equipment to meet project timelines.
  • Follows Health & Safety requirements for Site and Lab.
  • Work as a team player including open and honest communication, respecting confidentiality with any laboratory information.
