We have two different Instructional Design opportunities. Both descriptions and qualifications are below. The actual internal level/grade and compensation for this role will depend on the candidate's geographic location, overall experience, and skill level.

Preferred Location: Boston MA/Portsmouth NH, with a hybrid work schedule of 2 days in office.
May consider remote candidates depending on experience and if within 50 miles of these additional locations: Seattle WA, Indianapolis IN, Columbus OH, Plano TX, it will also be a hybrid work schedule.
Position 1: Learning Experience Designer
Summary:
Develops individual training program goals, overall program objectives and module objectives. Works with a variety of subject matter experts to design training curricula and programs, considered complex in nature. Uses e-Learning applications in a sophisticated manner to design interactive e-Learning products.
Responsibilities
- Assists lead designer in conducting in-depth learning needs analysis to identify learning objectives and to determine training solutions.
- Consults with leaders and subject matter experts to develop training curriculum and to identify individual training program goals, overall program objectives, and module objectives.
- Develops learning plans to support the skill development of employees over time.
- Applies knowledge of instructional design theory to design course content, working with subject matter experts, management, trainers, etc.
- At this level, creates new training programs from scratch, working independently, starting with conducting a formal analysis of training needs.
- Applies knowledge of adult learning theory to identify appropriate training media and methodologies based on audience learning styles, course content, audience location, point within the learning process, etc.
- Designing is created for traditional classroom, online classroom, self-paced e-Learning modules or a blend of approaches.
- Training methodologies may include group lecture, role play, simulation exercises, self-study, on-the-job training, computer-based training, etc.
- Reviews program evaluations, test results, and participant and manager feedback on training effectiveness to make recommendations for program improvement.
- Designs evaluation and skill assessment strategies and tools to measure program effectiveness, and to determine whether desired learning and performance outcomes are achieved.
- Develops valid criterion-referenced tests, rubrics and other methods of skill proficiency measurement.
- Identifies needs for outside resources, and sources vendors, as appropriate.
Position 2: Instructional Design Consultant
Summary:
Serves as a subject matter expert on instructional design and consultation with customers. Consults with leadership to set the instructional design strategy around evaluation, stakeholder management and cycle times. Analyzes and isolates the critical learning needs to support the evolving business and work environment. Based on that information, creates/directs rapid, innovative learning solutions to support. Coaches, mentors, and sets the standard of instructional design with colleagues and peers.
Responsibilities
- Leads multiple in-depth job-task analysis and/or needs assessment to identify learning objectives, and to determine training solutions and other performance enhancement solutions (e.g., management reinforcement, rewards, role clarity, job aids, etc.)
- Consults with senior managers and executives and various team members to develop training curriculum and to identify individual training program goals, overall program objectives, and module objectives.
- Develops curriculum plans to support the development of employee performance over time. Applies knowledge of instructional design theory to design course content, working with subject matter experts, management, trainers, e-Learning specialists, etc. At this level, creates new training programs from scratch, working independently, starting with conducting a formal analysis of training needs.
- Applies expert knowledge of adult learning theory to identify appropriate training media and methodologies based on audience learning styles, course content, audience location, point within the learning process, etc. Designing is created for traditional classroom, virtual, self-paced or a blend of approaches. Training methodologies may include group lecture, role play, simulation exercises, self-study, on-the-job training, podcast, virtual reality, etc.
- Works with instructional design specialists to develop Learning programs and applications considered complex in nature.
- Reviews program evaluations, test results, and participant and manager feedback on training effectiveness to make recommendations for program improvement.
- Designs evaluation strategies and tools to measure program effectiveness, and to determine whether desired learning and performance outcomes are achieved.
- Assists in developing valid criterion-referenced tests. Identifies needs for outside resources, and sources vendors, as appropriate.
- Handles vendor management, to include coordination of resources and ensuring quality of product and service levels delivered.
- Coaches, mentors, and sets the standard of instructional design with colleagues and peers. Provides feedback to others.
Qualifications
Position 1 Learning Experience Designer
- Prior experience includes working with complex content and designing training for multiple delivery modalities (traditional classroom, online classroom, and self-paced e-Learning modules)
- Experience with developing valid criterion-referenced tests, rubrics and other methods of skill proficiency measurement a must.
- Knowledge of automating instructional design using AI
- Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrates excellent project management skills
- Has broad knowledge of instructional technologies, is thoroughly proficient in the advanced use of e-Learning tools, and can augment regular functionality with some custom programming
- Competencies typically acquired through a bachelor's degree or related experience, in addition to 7+ years of training design experience, to include leading training program design efforts
- Master's degree in Instructional Design or a related field preferred
Qualifications
Position 2 Instructional Design Consultant
- Prior experience includes working with complex content and designing training for multiple delivery modalities (traditional classroom, online classroom, and self-paced eLearning modules).
- Broad knowledge of instructional technologies is thoroughly proficient in the advanced use of eLearning tools and can augment regular functionality with some custom programming.
- Experience with skills-based learning and measurement strategies a must.
- Acutely aware of external trends and emerging technologies for adult learning and instructional design
- Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills; stakeholder management
- Demonstrates excellent project management skills
- Competencies typically acquired through a bachelor's degree or related experience, in addition to 7+ years of training design experience, to include leading training program design efforts

The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
