This position will support the effort within NETL's Point Source Capture portfolio to understand air emissions resulting from degradation of carbon capture solvents being used in various industrial processes. This work will involve identification and quantification of emitted solvent degradation products in both the gas and aqueous phase. As part of this work, the researcher will work with a small core team of researchers in both laboratory and field setting, using analytical chemistry characterization techniques such as gas chromatography, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. The researcher will also collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of research scientists and engineers in providing subject matter expertise in analytical chemistry which may lead to involvement in other related projects at NETL.

The researcher will be conducting research on-site at NETL in Pittsburgh, PA. As part of their duties, the researcher will be asked to participate in field tests within the United States to perform environmental sampling, often with short notice.

Primary Responsibilities :

  • Perform collaborative experimental research at NETL Pittsburgh to:
  • Operate and become an expert resource in gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and other gas & liquid chromatography methods.
  • Develop analytical methods for various samples in collaboration with NETL researchers
  • Collect samples from various carbon capture pilot scale project sites around the United States.
  • Identify amine degradation compounds that result from laboratory-scale solvent degradation tests.
  • Perform routine maintenance, instrument calibration of the relevant analytical instruments and coordinate needed troubleshooting efforts.
  • Collaborate with engineers and project managers at NETL and carbon capture pilot facilities to determine sampling plans and instrument requirements.
  • Collaborate with the principal investigator (PI), other researchers, engineering and support staff to accomplish project-related tasks.
  • This position will require field travels (up to 20%) for collecting samples, often with short notice, upon customer request.
  • Disseminate research results through presentations in relevant scientific forums, and/or publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Required Education, Experience & Other:

  • A Master's degree in chemistry, environmental engineering, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or related field with 2+ years of applicable experience
  • Experience performing and designing experiments utilizing GC-MS or LC-MS and demonstrated understanding in interpreting mass spectrometry data for untargeted analysis
  • A proven track record of publication in reputable peer-reviewed journals, as well as experience in presenting results at relevant scientific forums
  • Must be able to meet the requirement for gaining access to work on the NETL campus.
  • Flexibility, ability and willingness to travel approximately 20% of the time, sometimes last minute
  • Due to visiting several DOE sites and access restrictions, candidate must be a U.S. Citizen

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD preferred
  • Independent researcher with experience of managing multiple research projects in a laboratory setting
  • Track record of close collaboration with multiple researchers, internally or externally, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills and serving as technical resource within a research group.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for technical and general audiences
  • Experience performing and designing experiments utilizing GC-FID, GC-TCD, GC-ECD, or GC-NCD for quantitative analysis
  • Experience in other relevant analytical chemistry techniques such as LC-QTOF-MS, FT-IR, and fixed gas analysis using GC
  • Knowledge of the design and operation of solvent-based CO2 capture systems, particularly as it relates to amine-based solvent chemistry and degradation analysis
  • Experience with organic chemical synthesis of new compounds
