Job Summary

Kairos Power is seeking a highly motivated Nuclear Safety Analysis Engineer to join our Safety Analysis team. In this role, you will collaborate with team members to perform detailed analyses that are critical to the development and licensing of the Kairos Power FHR. Your primary responsibilities will include conducting effluent and postulated-event simulations of FHR systems, documenting key analysis outputs, and supporting licensing interactions with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Additional responsibilities will include interfacing with design, instrumentation and control, materials, chemistry, and other teams to fully define the FHR safety case. This work will play a vital role in supporting the reactor design process and licensing our advanced reactor. This position provides a unique opportunity to work at the cutting edge of reactor safety analysis and licensing, contributing to the development of transformative nuclear technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Perform both accident and effluent radiological source term evaluations of postulated event scenarios for a first-of-a-kind advanced reactor
  • Collaborate with team members to develop novel radiological source term analysis methodologies
  • Support design organizations in evaluating the generation, transport, and release of material at risk within reactor systems  
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of NRC regulations, guidance documents, and industry standards relevant to source term analysis
  • Participate in the development and validation of computational models and tools used in source term evaluation
  • Assist in preparing technical responses and presentations for NRC audits, meetings, and Requests for Additional Information (RAIs)
  • Support deterministic assessments to inform safety case development
  • Contribute to internal safety reviews and provide subject matter expertise on radiological release mechanisms and mitigation strategies
  • Engage in peer reviews of analysis inputs and outputs to ensure quality and consistency
  • Postprocess and analyze calculation outputs to evaluate releases of radioactive materials during postulated events to ensure adherence to regulatory limits
  • Document calculation outputs to contribute to the reactor license application
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in Nuclear or Chemical Engineering or a related field or demonstrated experience in radiological source term analysis
  • Familiarity with Python or R for model development
  • Familiarity with source term codes such as MELCOR or MAAP
  • Familiarity with sensitivity analysis techniques.
  • Familiarity with compiled computer languages such as Fortran or C++ is beneficial
  • Familiarity with LaTeX for technical documentation
  • Experience collaborating with version control tools, such as Git
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Effective communication and collaboration abilities 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of computational tools and languages for model development
  • Knowledge of source term modeling tools
  • Ability to critically evaluate numerical results, model assumptions, and sensitivity to inputs.
  • Knowledge of Quality Assurance (QA) principles in a safety or regulatory environment.
  • Understanding of regulatory frameworks and safety analysis guidance.
  • Proficiency in developing simplified scoping models for complex systems
  • Ability to work with highly collaborative team  
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently
  • Prioritizes and ensures safety of oneself and others
  • Ability to proactively collect, manage, and transfer knowledge
  • Ability to seek different and novel ways to create efficiencies when working on problems, challenges, and issues

  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another. 
  • Adjusting, moving, transporting, installing, positioning, or removing objects up to 20 pounds in all directions. 
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.

Travel

  • Some travel may be required for workshops and project assistance

The salary range for this position is $122,300 to $143,800 for employees working onsite at our Alameda, CA headquarters. The range provided in this job posting represents the typical range or starting rate of candidates hired in California. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, the market data for your work location, and a comparison to other employees already in the role.
