Job Description:

The Senior Director Field Medical Affairs will build and manage a high-performing team of field-based Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs) and Medical Access Value Liaisons. This is a high visibility position responsible for executing Medical Affairs Field Strategy. This role serves as a medical and scientific representative to the health care community of HCPs/KOLs, and DOLs. This individual is a key leader in Medical Scientific Affairs with direct accountability for the performance of the Medical Affairs field team. This is a field-based position. Position will report to Vice President Global Medical and Scientific Affairs.

Responsibilities (include but not limited to):

  • Lead high-performing team (MSLs, Medical Access Liaisons) with recruitment, training, and retention responsibilities
  • Develop and execute strategic medical affairs field plans (including tactical planning) manage budget; provide meaningful metrics on Field Medical Activities
  • Ensure geographical distribution and robust training for the Field Medical team
  • Collaborate/develop field medical training curriculum and development of content when applicable
  • Identification and interactions of KOLs/HCPs nationally, regionally and on a local community level
  • Oversee scientific exchange including understanding research interests, represent Ironwood at conferences, and monitor therapeutic landscape
  • Generate insights, and opinions informing strategy and material development
  • Maintain policies for compliant HCP interactions
  • Effectively balance field and headquarters responsibilities, integrating efforts between cross-functional partners (R&D, commercial, etc.)
  • Insure appropriate representation and discussion of medical scientific information on the company’s products in settings, such as conferences, advisory boards, presentations to payers, formulary decision makers, and other HCP’s
  • Oversee field medical engagements and interactions to ensure appropriate education of medical scientific information relevant to Ironwood’s products
  • Contributing to meeting planning efforts through close collaboration with internal colleagues, booth and scientific session coverage, and HCP meetings
  • Contribute to Ironwood’s strategic business initiatives in the areas of company-sponsored research, and investigator initiated studies

Requirements:

  • Doctorate degree PhD, Pharm.D., MD/DO, or equivalent is required
  • 10+ years of relevant industry/field experience. Previous experience in rare disease and Gastroenterology is strongly preferred.
  • Expertise in development/management of field medical team(s), with successful track record. Ability to set, strategy, assess performance, and drive excellence while motivating and influencing teams
  • Ability to leverage field based clinical insights informing strategic initiatives
  • Develop field medical training curriculum and content when applicable
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and communication skills and relationship management and working with cross functional teams
  • Self-motivated excellent with time management, and prioritization abilities
  • Understanding of compliance related to interactions with field medical activities
  • Ability and willingness to travel nationally minimum 50% of time, including some weekends to congresses

Ironwood currently anticipates that the initial base salary for this position could range from between $248,000-$289,695.  The actual base salary will depend, in part, on the successful candidate’s qualifications for the role, including education and experience.  Ironwood offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits program to eligible employees, including Restricted Stock Unit awards; eligibility to participate in either a bonus or sales incentive program; company-sponsored 401(k) with matching contributions; eligibility for medical, dental, vision and prescription drug benefits; wellness stipends; and a generous vacation/holiday schedule.
