Job Description

Primary Function of Position

Design and construct pioneering manufacturing equipment used to support the production of the Intuitive Ion robotic systems and associated instruments and accessories in a multi-national manufacturing environment. The Staff Mechanical Engineer is an individual with high energy, ownership, integrity, and accountability who will drive equipment project planning, development, prototyping, validation, upgrade, and maintenance activities across a variety of fixtures and automated equipment. The successful candidate should also provide technical leadership within the Automation, Equipment, and Test Group (AET) and inspire and work closely with the team of junior and senior engineering staff to implement equipment design best practices.

Essential Job Duties

  • Design and build in-house proprietary manufacturing equipment from concept to full implementation.
  • Investigate and implement optimal methods and equipment design and architecture to perform critical manufacturing operations using best practices.
  • Ensure manufacturing equipment designs meet functional, safety, ergonomic, documentation, and validation requirement.
  • Assist in creating and managing equipment design metrics, specifications, schedules, and resource plan that best support company and department goals.
  • Direct and perform qualification and validation on manufacturing equipment.
  • Determine troubleshooting, maintenance, and calibration procedures for equipment.
  • Provide technical leadership to equipment staff on custom mechanical and controls design as well as integration with manufacturing equipment.
  • Interface with a multitude of technical and counterpart teams in the creation and sustaining of manufacturing equipment and production operations.
  • Establish and manage external resources (contractors, system integrators, vendors) in the planning and execution of equipment projects.
  • Support quality and internal/external audits as required
  • Support other equipment-related operations and duties as required

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience

  • Minimum 8 years of manufacturing equipment design experience; medical device industry experience with catheter emphasis a plus
  • Experience in creating equipment architecture and specifications, as well as planning and executing prototyping, testing, and validation activities
  • Hands-on experience in developing mechanical and mechatronics hardware involving motion, pneumatics, vision, sensors, electronics, and controls
  • Experience in planning and executing equipment deliverables on tight deadlines
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong CAD expertise and experience managing CAD users, SolidWorks preferred
  • Experience with enterprise software (e.g. Agile document control, JIRA, Confluence, Polarion etc…)
  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally up to 5%

Required Education and Training

  • Minimum BS in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering or related fields

It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications.
