Job Description

Primary Function of Position:

Intuitive Surgical, Inc. produces the Ion Bronchoscopy system, a minimally invasive robotic catheter system that accesses deep into the lungs and offers treatment not possible with conventional tools.

This senior technician will support design engineers to build new steering catheter prototypes. The ideal candidate will be fully proficient in all typical catheter manufacturing processes. The candidate should be comfortable working with minimal supervision, and with minimal work instructions and be able to take ideas from R&D engineers and figure out how to build fully functional catheter prototypes.

The Senior Technician is responsible for supporting a team of mechanical engineers developing and improving products at Intuitive. The ideal candidate will be fully proficient in all typical instrument manufacturing processes. The candidate should be comfortable working with minimal supervision, and with minimal work instructions, sometimes supporting multiple projects at one. They should also be able to take ideas from R&D engineers and figure out how to build those ideas into fully functional instrument prototypes. A strong sense of integrity, care, and attention to detail is required as well as a commitment to developing products of the highest quality.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for completion of all manufacturing processes on catheter-based prototypes including soldering, microscopic wire and cable stripping, hot box reflowing and thermal bonding, braiding, adhesive bonding, laminating, and laser welding.
  • Assisting with all aspects of early prototype builds, including procurement of material, inspection of materials and subassemblies, rework of components, assembly, troubleshooting, and repair of prototype instruments.
  • Documenting assembly procedures and training other technicians on assembly. Assisting in knowledge transfer to other groups / teams.
  • Be equally comfortable building early prototype with minimal instructions and V&V product by following formal work instructions and Good Documentation Practices (GDP).
  • Contribute to the design and build of simple fixtures or tools as necessary to help build prototypes.
  • Conduct a wide variety of testing at a system, device or sub assembly level. Includes organizing, overseeing, and collaborating with other groups to assemble and test prototypes.
  • Collecting, recording, and reporting test results.
  • Be resourceful with a 'can do' attitude as will be expected to work with available materials and tools (that may not be ideal size) while optimized designs are on order.

Qualifications

Skills, Experience, Education, & Training:

  • Minimum 8 years of experience as a production or R&D technician.
    Minimum education: High school graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Skilled in all advanced catheter prototype fabrication techniques including braiding, laminating, thermal bonding/reflowing with hotbox, flaring, tipping, adhesive bonding, soldering, laser welding and general assembly.
  • Proficient with commonly used catheter assembly and inspection equipment including, microscope, soldering station, hot box, laminator, braiding machine, coil winder, adhesive dispenser.
  • Proficient assembling small (microscopic), complex assemblies
  • Familiar with common measurement tools including dial calipers, micrometers, snap gauge, timer and optical comparator, force gauges, Instron and other materials testing equipment.
  • Hands-on technician with the proven ability to work well independently and in a team environment.
  • Excellent creative problem-solving skills
  • Good communication and documentation skills.
  • Computer skills: Capable of running software-driven tests. Capable of interacting with the resultant data.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, benefits, and equity. It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications.
