Summary:
The Manager, Website, serves as the product owner for HHMI's websites, providing oversight for all website-related work and ensuring web content aligns with the Institute's overall priorities and strategic goals. This role will create, maintain, and evaluate digital content that directly advances HHMI's scientific and education missions and supports content users.
In addition, the Manager, Website is responsible for the ongoing redesign efforts and site updates for HHMI.org and the Institute's sub-brand websites, ensuring cohesive branding and high-quality content for all HHMI web content.
The Manager, Website will have a combination of technical and project management skills to keep our websites updated, functional, easy to use, on-brand, and on-message.
This role works a three-day hybrid schedule at HHMI's Headquarters in Chevy Chase, MD, and reports to the Director, Digital Media and Marketing.
This position will remain open until May 21, 2025, at 5:00 PM ET, after which applications will no longer be accepted.

What you will do:
Web Management and Strategy
- Serve as the business owner for HHMI.org and affiliated websites, overseeing ongoing site management, coordinating site enhancements with technology teams and stakeholders, and ensuring digital content and functionality align with HHMI's brand, accessibility standards, and strategic priorities. Act as the primary liaison for Marketing and Internal Communications with IT and represent the team on cross-departmental planning groups.
- Manage a portfolio of web projects and digital communications initiatives, including content development campaigns, site enhancements, feature upgrades, and technical updates. Lead cross-functional teams and external vendors through project lifecycles - from initial concept through execution - using standardized workflows, agile principles, and analytics-based evaluation to ensure projects meet meaningful communications outcomes.
- Lead the full website redesign of HHMI.org as product owner, collaborating with leadership to define the site's strategic vision and user experience priorities. Oversee cross-functional internal teams and external partners, ensuring successful delivery aligned with HHMI's guiding pillars, mission, and brand identity.
- Lead ongoing digital strategy for HHMI.org, ensuring the site evolves to reflect institutional goals, meet user needs, and keep pace with changing digital best practices.
- Establish and maintain content calendars to ensure HHMI's digital channels remain accurate, engaging, regularly refreshed, and reflective of organizational priorities.
- Develop a keen understanding of HHMI.org's key audiences and drive strategies to meet their evolving needs, including through audience research, usability testing, and data-informed improvements.
- Collaborate with internal teams across HHMI, including scientific and operations staff at the Janelia Research Campus, to assess digital communications needs and provide guidance, tools, and training for effective content development and publishing.
- Systematically evaluate and test website content and functionality, ensuring accuracy, mobile responsiveness, usability, SEO, accessibility compliance (WCAG standards), and overall high-quality user experience.
- Design web layouts and publish content, applying brand and style standards consistently across pages and features. Actively reflect HHMI's inclusive environment and values through thoughtful content choices and digital experiences.
- Maintain strong content governance practices, ensuring published materials adhere to HHMI's editorial standards, brand guidelines, and accessibility and usage policies.
Digital Media and Asset Management
- Provide strategic direction and oversight for HHMI's Digital Asset Management (DAM) platform, ensuring it supports organizational needs for collaboration, accessibility, and long-term content preservation.
- Lead governance efforts for metadata, tagging, usage rights, and asset lifecycle policies in coordination with Communications, Legal (OGC), and other stakeholders.
- Partner with IT and vendors to improve DAM functionality, usability, and integration with related platforms.
- Collaborate with teams across HHMI, including BioInteractive and Janelia, to understand asset needs and promote effective use of the DAM.
- Supervise the Digital Media and Asset Management Specialist, supporting daily operations and championing training and documentation efforts.
What you bring:
- Bachelor's degree.
- At least five years of relevant experience in communications or web design.
- Experience leading creative digital projects.
- Experience collaborating closely with stakeholders who are technical experts.
- Experience working with content management systems, particularly Drupal, including administrative functions, theming, and configuration.
- Knowledge of HTML, CSS, and dynamic content; familiarity with responsive design principles and online production environments.
- Proficiency with web analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics, Tag Manager) and ability to translate data into actionable insights.
- Familiarity with web accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG) and inclusive design best practices.
- Understanding of digital asset management (DAM) systems and workflows, including metadata standards, rights management, and structured file organization.
- Awareness of SEO principles and how content structure, metadata, and site design impact search performance.
- Proficient with project management and task tracking tools (e.g., Basecamp, Jira).
- Basic understanding of mobile (iOS and Android) application environments and web technologies.
- Ability to translate strategic goals and user needs into digital concepts and experiences.
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud and basic graphic design skills, including editing and placing digital media (photography, video, and graphics) for web use.
- Strong understanding of visual design principles, color theory, layout, web navigation, and multimedia content.
- Experience applying editorial style guides and brand standards to maintain consistency across digital platforms.
- Demonstrated project management experience, including planning, execution, and close-out using agile methodology.
- Skilled in leading collaborative, cross-functional teams and managing digital communications projects across departments.
- Experience managing external vendors or consultants to deliver digital projects within scope and timeline.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders across departments.
- Experience supervising or mentoring staff and fostering a collaborative, growth-oriented team environment.
- Comfortable working independently and proactively, with a strong sense of initiative and follow-through.
- Professionalism, adaptability, and a continuous improvement mindset.
Physical Requirements:

Compensation Range
$100,530.40 (minimum) - $125,663.00 (midpoint) - $163,361.90 (maximum)

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal consistency when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
