Summary:

The Director, Digital Media and Marketing, plays a lead role in ensuring that the Institute's work, particularly its comprehensive programs in scientific research and science education, is effectively communicated to key audiences through social and digital media platforms and paid strategy campaigns.

The Director, Digital Media and Marketing, leads a team that manages external platforms and creates visual media for those platforms that align with HHMI brand standards and overall Communications priorities. This position spearheads HHMI marketing initiatives, ensuring a targeted, analytical, and results-oriented approach to all marketing campaigns.

This role has a hybrid schedule of three days at HHMI's Headquarters in Chevy Chase, MD, and reports to the Senior Director, Marketing and Internal Communications.

This position will remain open until May 21, 2025, at 5:00 PM ET, after which applications will no longer be accepted.

What you will do:

  • Provide leadership and direction for all Marketing activities, including paid strategy, and work with external marketing partners. Designs marketing campaigns to reflect priorities established by HHMI senior leadership - increasing awareness of HHMI programs within the scientific research community to drive interest and ensure competitive, high-quality applicant pools across HHMI. Aligns marketing with overall Communications strategy and brand guidelines.
  • Proactively monitor and report on campaign metrics to ensure success, adjusting strategy as needed to achieve desired outcomes. Responsible for meeting established marketing campaign targets and goals.
  • Serve as a resource on marketing best practices in higher education and related settings and provide guidance to direct reports and other Communications team members to ensure content is targeted and effective.
  • Provide oversight for social media management including coordination with sub-brand accounts (Tangled Bank, BioInteractive, and Janelia). Aligns social media strategy with HHMI priorities to reflect programmatic and operational needs. Works with their team to develop strategies to reach audiences through new platforms not historically used by HHMI and through creative strategies on existing platforms.
  • Work collaboratively with Director, Leadership Communications and External Relations and provides real-time updates on social media metrics and activity during critical events.
  • Work closely with the Marketing Manager to develop and maintain visual brand standards.
  • Coordinate and oversee the production of Visual Media for use on internal and external channels. Oversee contract graphic designers, including managing schedule, budget, design, and scope.
  • Provide leadership and direction for the Digital Media Asset Management platform and HHMI's websites, including ongoing redesign efforts.
  • Champions HHMI values by creating an inclusive, collaborative environment focused on excellence and innovation.
  • Responsible for the direct and indirect supervision of five (5) employees.

What you bring:

  • A bachelor's degree is required; an advanced degree is strongly preferred.
  • Ten plus years of experience in the communications field, including marketing, social media, and visual communications expertise.
  • Ten plus years of experience in positions of increasing supervisory and management-level responsibility involving direct supervision of employees and external resources.
  • High-level proficiency with digital technologies, visual media, and multiple social media communications tools and analytics and demonstrated knowledge of marketing best practices applicable to non-profit and higher education environments.
  • Experience in higher education marketing and sales funnel model preferred.
  • Creative, disciplined thinker who actively seeks and encourages new approaches and ideas to advance the mission of the Institute.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • An aptitude for using quantitative and qualitative data in making decisions and measuring success, while recognizing the limits of metrics.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of social media and marketing analytics.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with subject-matter experts in diverse fields outside of one's area of expertise.
  • Skilled manager who encourages the open exchange of ideas and sharing of information as foundations for enabling autonomy and strong decision-making.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues at all levels as a positive and diplomatic team player.

Physical Requirements

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).

Compensation Range
$190,260.80 (minimum) - $237,826.00 (midpoint) - $309,173.80 (maximum)

Pay Type:
Annual

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal consistency when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
