Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ) - a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York - seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission-aligned Social Service Specialist to support our team!

The Social Service Specialist will bring a passion for the mission of Harlem Children's Zone: break the cycle of intergenerational poverty with comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds up opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life.

We are seeking Social Services Specialists for our Social Services Support Team program. Social Services Support Team was created to support Harlem Children's Zone pipeline services, including Elementary, Middle, and High School after-school programs. The Social Services Support Team provides crisis intervention and support for students, addressing issues that impede our students' ability to be successful in reaching their emotional, social, and academic goals.

We are also seeking Social Services Specialists to support the College Success Office in addressing issues that impede our students' ability to be successful in reaching their emotional, social, academic, and life goals. The position serves as an integral role within the team dynamic at CSO. The ideal candidate can manage multiple responsibilities, work independently and within a team, and understand the complexity of young adults navigating systems and developing the skills needed to succeed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree required (MSW/LMSW, Mental Health Counseling, Psychology, or related fields)
  • Willing to work towards LMSW

  • Must have experience working with school-aged youth and families, as well as the ability to create a solid connection to the community
  • Must be able to travel from site to site and withstand exposure to environmental factors
  • Great attention to detail and the ability to work effectively with multiple individuals/systems
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written
  • Passion for children and families and a strong connection to the community
  • Ability to work as part of a collaborative team
  • Bilingual preferred: English/Spanish, English/French, English/Creole

What you'll do (Social Services Team)

  • Adhere to organizational protocols and standards of excellence
  • Provide consultation and support to programs through the Harlem Children's Zone pipeline as concerns are identified
  • Conduct assessments and make referrals as needed to address identified social/emotional/behavioral/academic concerns through collaboration with leadership staff at the various programs
  • Maintain daily case note records
  • Development and facilitation of student workshops and student groups
  • Development and facilitation of staff development training and workshops across Harlem Children's Zone programs
  • Work closely with staff, students, and parents to develop strategies in addressing the safety and basic needs of the students and families
  • Work with staff, students, and parents to identify community support services and resources to address student and family needs
  • Serve as a liaison/advocate for students and parents with community resources and referrals
  • Maintain ongoing collaboration and communication with assigned program staff (Supervisors and Directors specifically) regarding identified concerns and the approach to address them
  • Adhere to the organization and after-school program policies and protocol
  • Participate in pipeline program events and initiatives in order to build rapport with students and families
  • Perform other duties as assigned

What you'll do (College Success Office)

  • Adhere to organizational protocols and standards of excellence
  • Provide consult and support to the Center for Higher Education and Career Support
  • Conduct field visits to students' homes, universities, and other community programs
  • Provide community referrals as needed to address concerns through collaboration with the Center for Higher Education and Career Support team
  • Maintain collaboration and communication with CHECS staff regarding identified concerns and the approach to address them
  • Facilitate workshops/trainings for students and staff
  • Serve as an advocate for students with outside entities
  • Perform other duties assigned
  • Input case notes for all active students monthly
  • Update the Social Service Tracking Report weekly
  • Store, protect, and back up all documentation in accordance with Social Services protocols
  • Maintain frequent and regular contact with students to monitor progress and to troubleshoot concerns
  • Establish and maintain relationships with campus and community liaisons through ongoing communication
  • Participate in larger office events and initiatives in order to build rapport with students

The starting salary for this position is $60,000 - $65,000 per year with a comprehensive benefits package including employer-covered health insurance.
