Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ) - a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York - seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, mission-aligned Payroll Manager to join our Human Resources Team.

The Payroll Manager will bring a passion for the mission of Harlem Children's Zone: break the cycle of intergenerational poverty with comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds up opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life.

The Payroll Manager oversees and directs all payroll procedures, ensures compliance with laws and tax obligations, supervises the payroll team, and maintains accurate payroll records. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in managing all payroll-related matters from inception to completion across a matrixed organization with over 2000 employees. This position will report to the CHRO, and it's a hybrid role with three days required in the NYC office.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in HR, Business Management, Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 8+ yrs. of hands-on and progressive experience leading Payroll for over matrixed organizations with over 3000 employees

Who you are

  • Knowledge and experience with accounting principles, payroll systems implementations and management
  • Extensive knowledge of the payroll function, including balancing, internal controls, and payroll taxes across diverse jurisdictions
  • Strong mathematical and analytical understanding; strong problem solving and ability to work independently
  • Super user of payroll software (ADP, UKG, Paychex, ETC)

What you'll do

  • Design, plan and execute HCZ's overall Payroll strategy and structure in alignment with missing of the People and organizational objectives.
  • Manage, direct and oversee companywide central payroll unit and preparation of biweekly payroll for over 3000 employees
  • Develop, implement and oversee internal controls of payroll system
  • Identify and introduce appropriate and effective practices to ensure timely and accurate payroll processing
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations
  • Design and implement audits to drive compliance and minimize risk or wrongdoing
  • Design and implement appropriate reports, schedules, spreadsheets, analyses, summaries, and all other necessary materials
  • Works closely with the Finance team in maintaining and closing all year-end and W2 activities
  • Manages projects and perform additional duties/responsibilities as needed

  • Hybrid Model (3 Days in office/2 Days remote)
