Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ) - a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York - seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission-aligned Director to join the College Success Office.

The Director will bring a passion for the mission of Harlem Children's Zone: break the cycle of intergenerational poverty with comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds up opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life.

We are currently seeking a Director to lead the College Success and Education and Innovation Teams at HCZ's College Success Office. The ideal candidate will be experienced in departmental leadership, cultivating relationships, and have a myriad of experiences within higher education.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Required

Who you are

  • Master's degree in Education, Counseling, or related social services field preferred
  • 8+ years of experience in student affairs, college admissions, college counseling, student advising, and data-driven methods to increase student admission to and matriculation into college
  • Strong knowledge of admissions and enrollment policies, alternative programs/vocational studies
  • Strong knowledge of higher education, financial aid, and postsecondary education
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to complete tasks accurately and in a timely manner
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule to accommodate the needs of the program, including evening, and some weekends
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to function well as part of a team and work independently
  • Comfortable working in various urban settings and with diverse populations
  • Proactive and anticipatory thinking and planning skills
  • Prior experience with youth and young adults of diverse cultural backgrounds is a plus

What you'll do

  • Provide direct coaching and supervision to the Assistant Director. Provide leadership and coaching to Lead Counselors, Education and Innovation Specialists, and a team of 25+ College Counselors
  • Collaborate with school staff, families, community partners, and college representatives to create a supportive network for scholars throughout their college journeys.
  • Lead in the development and execution of a differentiated professional development plan for the team of college counselors and coordinators.
  • Assist the Managing Director in establishing and maintaining relationships with colleges, universities, and other post-secondary opportunities to provide resources for scholars.
  • Work with the Data and Evaluation teams to monitor and evaluate program effectiveness to drive continuous improvement. Areas of focus include student engagement, persistence, retention, enrollment, credit accumulation, and graduation
  • Ensure staff are up to date on trends in education, including but not limited to constructive behavior, perseverance, growth mindset, social skills, communication, participant engagement, and learning strategies for current college students and participants who are not in school
  • Ensure students have regular and substantive guidance and contact with College Counselors
  • Stay current on trends and best practices in college success and student support services, incorporating innovative strategies into program development.
  • Establish and maintain strong collaborative relationships with HCZ colleagues and other HCZ programs
  • Partner with CSO College Readiness Manager to cultivate relationships with colleges and universities to develop admission processes specific to our population and implement sustainable options for CSO scholars.

  • Monday through Friday
