This role also includes overseeing HBG’s digital print programs—including domestic and international print-on-demand, automatic replenishment, digital-first publishing, and in-stock protection—which are designed to support lean inventory management and reduce obsolescence costs.
While team development and management are a central responsibility, the broader purpose of this role is to drive innovation and operational efficiency companywide across all our publishing workstreams. This includes introducing technology-based solutions and measures, business process reviews, facilitating smart organizational change management, and enabling continuous process improvements that optimize publishing operations that align with our four pillars of understanding consumers, changing the story, increasing owner mentality, and building a growth mindset.
This position can be based in any HBG office location or be remote for the right candidate.
Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic leadership and daily oversight for HBG’s Digital Operations department, which includes the Digital Premedia & Design/Typesetting Group, the Digital Production Coordination Group, and the Digital Asset Operations Group.
- Lead and evolve company-wide initiatives to improve publishing workflows through thoughtful implementation of technology, data-driven decision-making, and sustainable change practices.
- Oversee operations related to ebook and print file creation, conversion, validation, quality assurance, and distribution to online retailers and internal systems.
- Direct HBG’s print-on-demand and automatic replenishment programs to ensure consistent availability and cost-effective inventory management.
- Build and sustain a collaborative, high-performing team culture across geographically distributed staff.
- Champion continuous improvement by identifying pain points and implementing solutions that streamline processes without compromising quality or creative standards.
- Maintain strong vendor relationships and negotiate service agreements to ensure the delivery of high-quality results that meet HBG’s standards and deadlines.
- Work cross-functionally with editorial, design, inventory, IT, legal, and sales departments to align digital production goals with overall publishing and business objectives, prioritizing the creation of scale while enabling diversity of creative output.
- Monitor industry trends and proactively assess new tools, systems, or workflows that could benefit HBG’s publishing operation. Also, represent the company in industry forums and standard definitions.
- Support SVP, Operations in implementing global projects and benchmarks against which progress can be efficiently and effectively measured across business groups.
- Oversee training programs, documentation, and process governance related to digital production tools and standards.
- Represent Digital Operations in executive-level meetings and strategic planning sessions.
Qualifications:
- 12+ years of experience in digital publishing, operations, production, or a related field, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
- Strong understanding of digital and print production workflows, including interior design, composition, file conversion, ebook standards, and metadata/distribution systems.
- Experience managing vendor relationships and negotiating contracts, particularly in the areas of digital production and print-on-demand.
- Demonstrated ability to build and lead cross-functional teams through change, leveraging technology and process optimization to achieve business goals.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills, with a track record of delivering results on time and within budget.
- Demonstrated ability to assemble and present relevant data that supports business cases for change
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments and with senior leadership.
- Proficiency with workflow platforms (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Workfront), digital asset management systems, and ebook distribution tools.
- Familiarity with change management methodologies and continuous improvement strategies is strongly preferred.
