Data Science at Included Health
Data Scientists at Included Health work on problems that are core to the company’s mission. Major challenges include developing systems and models to identify the highest quality doctors in the country as well as methodologies to uncover the subtle differences between each physician’s clinical expertise. In addition to developing the company’s core technologies, data scientists provide decision support analysis for many teams across the organization including product development, sales, marketing, and strategy. Data scale ranges from small data sets that fit on a single laptop to large multi-terabyte clinical information in distributed database systems.

Mission of Role
In Included Health’s 8+ years of operation, we have collected a lot of health and operational data. We have a massive opportunity to use that data to make every aspect of our organization data-driven. However, with the significant growth of the company, the organizational structure of when, where, and how that data needs to move around has become a more complex problem. The mission behind this role is to facilitate a data-driven culture across the company.

Impact
The Included Health product aims to maximize and optimize the delivery of clinical outcomes, member satisfaction and preference, cost savings, and operational efficiency. The right data access and visibility across the company will enable us to navigate that optimization much more effectively.  This is a unique opportunity to build strong, collaborative relationships with leaders throughout the company. This person will grow into a technical leader with a strong sphere of influence and cross-functional reach.  In this role you will have the opportunity to build the radars that help steer the company towards maximal revenue and value to our members and help lead the way to making Included Health a more data-driven organization.

Scope

  • The scope of this role is to understand the data needs of users across the company, translate needs into technical project proposals, and help deliver data solutions and operational visibility.
  • You will go “undercover” with various users to translate their needs into specifications of metrics definitions, measurement and experimentation methodologies, required tooling, and visualizations.
  • You will understand the commonalities across various user-needs to create systematic, scalable, and standardized solutions across the company.
  • You will deeply understand the Data Science tech stack and propose how best to use/enhance that tech stack towards the needs of measurement across the company.
  • You will help deliver tooling, dashboards, and insights to users across the organization to truly make Included Health a data-driven company.

Example Projects

  • Identify opportunities to provide greater savings to customers. To truly deliver on the value proposition we make to our customers, we need to have a comprehensive view of the potential value we can provide to each member. By coupling this potential value with a deep understanding of the member journey we can drive members to the services that will solve their needs and give them the best member experience. In this role you will be responsible for designing a data product that comprehensively identifies opportunities across our entire member population to guide marketing initiatives, customer conversations, navigation and engagement strategies, modeling initiatives, the delivery of clinical care and internal business decisions.

  • Evaluate member needs and identify actions to drive higher value. Who should receive an outreach call? Who should be directed to a clinical team member? Who needs claims help? Who can we engage in new registrations? Who can we serve with new chat functionality? Who would benefit from a behavioral health consultation? These are the questions we ask ourselves on a daily basis. By effectively identifying member needs and mapping them to actions we can drive greater engagement and satisfaction for our members. In this role you will partner with experts across the org to identify needs and actions. Leveraging the capabilities of our Recommendation and Personalization Engine you will be able to use these insights to unlock new product features and drive impact for members.

  • Influence the development of org-level metrics to drive decision making. To raise the standard of healthcare for everyone, we need to power healthcare decisions with data and make them accessible and trusted. Decision makers need to have reliable metrics that they can use to understand what is happening and why. They need the data to be readily available, accurate and up to date. In this role you will partner with Product, Quantitative Research, Data Products and Data Engineering to define business metrics and design the tools that empower product owners to meet the growing needs of our members. You will play a key role in working with business analysts to develop a narrative that showcases our capabilities to customers and gives them confidence in our value proposition.

Core Competencies

  • Excellent verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly and concisely articulate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical collaborators
  • Ability to translate org-wide business questions into technical requirements for user facing tools and analysis to influence product strategy
  • Ability to develop creative solutions to diverse problems including unstructured data messes, population health tools, customer reporting, ROI tracking, product enhancements and identification of business opportunities
  • Strong analytic skills with an ability to dig deep into product data and derive member insights for guiding product direction and greater personalization
  • Understanding of data science and engineering systems in order to partner effectively with data engineering and platform teams
  • Ability to design and execute cross-functional projects with multiple dependencies with the goal of driving impact at the org-level

Requirements

  • MS or equivalent work experience in Data Analytics, Computer Science, or similar computational/analytical field
  • 2+ years of experience in Data Science or Analytics
  • Strong statistics experience
  • SQL proficiency
  • Experience coding in Python or R (Our tech stack is in Python. If not proficient in Python, willingness to learn)
  • Experience (or deep interest) in health tech
