Job Description Summary

The role is for a Senior Embedded Developer in GE's Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control (WAMPAC) systems Centre of Excellence in Edinburgh.

Our team works end-to-end from substation to control room, in the fields of power system dynamics, stability, control and performance; covering instrumentation, monitoring & analytics, control systems and modelling. We work closely with customers to develop innovative solutions to emerging problems, shape and deliver software, design & deploy control schemes, and provide consulting services around power system performance, model validation, tuning of power system stabilizers, and more.

Job Description

Job Description Summary

To create outstanding software solutions for our global customers by contributing to the development of new and existing products working within a small specialist team. This role is with the embedded development team who develop the software platforms for our power systems control products. You will gain a hands-on role with the equipment you develop and be involved in the development from innovation right through to testing and deployments.
In this role, you will be working with GE hardware and software, to develop innovative solutions and platforms which will allow us to shape the smarter grid of the future. This technology is key to delivering our goal of increased intelligence in the grid.

Roles and Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

• Design, build, test and maintain world class software solutions

• Contribute towards the technical appraisal of new software solutions

• Provide technical support to the operations, power systems and commercial teams

• Perform other tasks that are consistent with the position and in support of your team

• Have an awareness of SDLC and methodologies like Lean/Agile/XP, CI, Software and Product Security, Sociability, Documentation Practices, refactoring and Testing Techniques

• Write code that meets standards and delivers desired functionality using the technology selected for the project

• Understand performance parameters and can assess application performance

• Understand core data structures and algorithms and implement them using a programming language suitable for the application

Education Qualification

Academic knowledge equivalent to a MSc or PhD degree in a "STEM" discipline (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics)

Required experience:

• Working experience with multiple programming languages such as C/C++, Python, Perl, Go, Ruby, Java

• Working experience with software versioning tools, such as git and subversion

• Thrives in an agile work environment with exposure to automated software building and testing

• Operates with general understanding of the impacts of technology choice to the software development life cycle

• Ability to create, adapt, and execute plans to unstructured and/or complex problems

• Demonstrated ability to use relevant information to anticipate problems and weigh options and promptly address issues, persevering through challenges

Nice to have:

• Experience building and extending Embedded Linux Systems (Yocto, Ptxdist, Buildroot)

• Experience in setting up network equipment and configuration for testing/support

• Experience with Docker or virtualisation techniques (Qemu, VMware)

• Experience in embedded electronics hardware development

• Experience with Cloud Platforms such as AWS, Azure

• Experience with relational DBs, such as SQLite, Postgres
