Key Responsibilities:

  • Administers and processes bi-weekly non-full-time payroll in the assigned groups with the highest degree of accuracy and within strict timelines using Banner Payroll system.
  • Takes steps to ensure that non-full-time entry is accurate and timely and that all internal controls and audit trails are in place.
  • Reviews, analyzes, and interprets documents received from HR and other departments for processing payroll transactions on new hires, contract changes, terminations, contract rate changes, retroactive payments, overtime, salary increases, reclassifications and leave of absence.
  • Utilizes pre-developed payroll forms or software provided by the Canada Revenue Agency to determining payroll deductions, when necessary.
  • Inputs data related to employee hours, costing information, banking information, garnishments, union dues, charity, tax forms parking, and adjustment.
  • Verifies and reconciles all input documents and transactions to the payroll register for accuracy of output.
  • Audits various Banner Payroll processes to ensure that employees' pays are calculated correctly; identifies and investigates any problems or discrepancies, fixing errors if required.
  • Ensures the maintenance of accurate data for filing and records related to the bi-weekly pre controls for payroll reconciliation.
  • Responds to employee payroll enquiries; provides front-line service to employees and visitors by responding to a variety of payroll and benefits related inquiries.
  • Interprets awards/agreements and contracts in relation to overtime and shift allowances etc.
  • Provides backup for other team members during high volume periods or when short-staffed, as necessary.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned by the Senior Manager, Payroll and HR Admin.
  • Other related duties as assigned.


Educational and Experience Requirements:

  • Three-year diploma/degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in Accounting, Business or Finance related field or equivalent. Payroll Compliance Practitioner Certification (PCP) is required.
  • Minimum of one years' payroll experience in a computerized environment. Experience with payroll administration in a unionized, large complex organization.
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office Skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of Federal and Provincial Payroll legislation and Employment Standards Act.
  • Working knowledge of pension plans, WSIB, EHT and the Income Tax Act as it relates to statutory payroll withholdings and taxable benefits.
  • Experience with T4s/T4As processing and reconciliation.
  • Experience with internal and external audits.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of general accounting principles, combined with payroll analysis, and reconciliation experience.
