Description
Work Arrangement: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, MI three times per week or other frequency dictated by the business.
Company Vehicle: Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review, you will be eligible to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program, through which you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and evaluate. Note: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies.
The Role
Recognized technical expert and leader in the Bumper, Grille, Fascia, and Trim (BGFT) organization, specializing in the global design and integration of Impact Bar Systems. Provides strategic consultation and drives implementation across cross-functional teams. Serves as the global voice for Impact Bar Systems, leading the Bill of Materials (BOM) strategy with a focus on reuse and standardization.

This role requires deep engineering expertise, particularly in global regulatory and consumer safety metrics, along with strong interpersonal and leadership skills to support GM programs worldwide.
Ideal Candidate:
An experienced BGFT engineer with specialized knowledge in Impact Bar Systems, exceptional communication and project management skills, and a passion for solving complex challenges. Responsible for mentoring engineers and leading Global Subsystem Leadership Team (GSSLT) initiatives. Collaborates closely with teams in design, purchasing, electrical and body engineering, quality, materials, and suppliers.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities)
- Create and Assess Business and Technical Strategies for Commodity
- Rollout BOM strategies
- Escalate issues quickly and appropriately
- Champion Common / Reuse
- Customer Focus and Innovation with Profit
- Coach / Mentor other technical engineers
- Global Peer Review & Engineering Excellence Review support
- Lead the development of GVDP 5.8 and Fast 5.8 component and pull ahead production tooling timing
- Lead development of BGFT strategies and best practices
- Approve BGFT Statement of Requirements (SOR)
- Maintain BGFT (DFMEA) baseline
- Support BGFT Quality, Reliability, & Durability (QRD) activities
- Support BGFT optimization strategies (mass, cost, sourcing, technology, materials, design)
- Lead development of BGFT features and performance requirements based on benchmarking, program priorities, and development of components to support new vehicle programs
- Provide technical support for advanced component or technology development
- Ability to work with limited data and make effective decisions always putting customer 1st
- Performing complex engineering evaluation analysis
- Communicating information to and from internal (PDT, regular program meetings, scheduled peer reviews and program gate reviews) and external customer organizations
- Staying abreast of relevant new technology and competitive products
- Create and support Interface Control Document (ICD) templates for component and subsystem interfaces
- Provide technical recommendations at Peer Reviews and through development process enhancements
- Conduct and update BGFT training (regulation, design, technology, new features, performance, etc.)
- Demonstrating Engineering with Simplicity (EWS) principles by developing creative solutions to reduce part numbers, piece cost, tooling cost, and Base Engineering Content (BEC)
- Evaluating and signing off on regulatory compliance related to Impact Bar Systems
- Travel as required, about 5% (including international)

Additional Description
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering
- 8 years of engineering experience in a related area
- Understanding of engineering theory and principles of design
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills involving ability to work effectively cross-functionally and cross-culturally
- Ability in integration and system understanding
- Extensive level of analytical ability where problems are unusual or difficult
- Extensive level interpersonal skills to work effectively with others
- Thorough understanding of manufacturing processes
- Expert on engineering operations, processes, and best practices
- Extensive expertise within the business unit of leading-edge or complex technologies, relevant disciplines, theories, or techniques
- Strong understanding of materials, engineering theory and principles of design
- Designs and develops solutions to considerably complex problems
- Consistent collaboration of Global & Regional teamwork for strategy development and critical issue resolution
- Demonstrated ability of "dealing with ambiguity" to enable timely decision making
- Proven leadership skills which translate to high degree of inner self confidence and ability to motivate others
- Expert in Impact Bar Systems global regulation and consumer metrics

- Master of Science degree in Engineering
- Master of Business Administration (MBA)
- 10 years of engineering experience in a related area
