This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Milford, MI or Warren, MI (Preferred) three times per week or other frequency dictated by the business.

The Role
Electronic Control Units (ECUs) in high Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) applications are growing in the global automotive market. We seek a creative and energetic Safety Engineer to perform safety analysis of GM Hardware Designs and develop internal analysis procedures for build-to-print (B2P) ECU designs under GM's Design First initiative. This role develops System Safety Case for ECU within Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) electrical architecture technologies, crucial for GM's vision of Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion.
The ideal candidate will be experienced in developing full safety case applying industry standards and facilitate communication, strategic problem-solving, high learning agility, and have a commitment to innovation.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities)
- Drive hardware safety analysis, hazard identification, and risk mitigation efforts using both qualitative and quantitative methods
- Maintain safety concepts, requirements, and architectures at system and hardware levels.
- Perform FMEDA, FTA, and ASIL decomposition.
- Lead hazard and risk assessments, safety goal identification, and ASIL determination.
- Define and review diagnostic coverage strategies, hardware safety mechanisms, and fault-tolerant designs.
- Develop ECU safety strategies balancing system safety with feature availability and performance.
- Collaborate with engineering departments and suppliers to facilitate timely delivery of safety critical system content
- Mentor organizational partners on safety critical system and process-specific knowledge, working with Senior System Safety engineers as needed.
- Travel as needed (5-10% max)

- Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or another related Engineering degree
- 5 years of engineering experience in product development with safety critical systems or a related field of expertise
- Experience in electronic circuit/software design, analysis, development, validation.
- Understanding of semiconductor physics, structures, models, and failure mechanisms.
- Ability to collaborate with diverse teams globally
- Knowledge of in-vehicle communication networks (CAN, Ethernet)
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
- Master's Degree
- Familiarity with ISO 26262 or other functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, IEC 62304, or DO-178C
- 2 or more years of engineering experience with systems safety analysis, systems, or SDV Architecture, Controller designs
- Domain expertise in embedded controller system design for automotive or similar industry
- Proficient in qualitative and quantitative Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) process using industry common tools.
- Areas of expertise include: Software design, analysis, development, validation
- Machine learning, simulation methods and data acquisition
- Understanding of emerging standards such as ISO 21448 (Safety of the Intended Function) and UL 4600.
